  • Missouri Comprimise

    *Missouri wanted to be a slave state.
    *They made a compromise that would make Maine a free state so that it could balance the sides of the free and the slave states.
    *They made a temperary change that settled the argument between which state was a free state and who was a slave state.
    *This was a bandaid solution which means it was only a temperary change or it was to cover up the conflict without actually solving it.

  • Wilmont Proviso

    *It proposed a law making all the land gathered from Mexico free.
    *This made the Southern states angry and scared because they wanted slavery and they didn't want anything to happen to it.
  • Comprimise of 1850

    *This was a series of 5 bills that were put together and passed by Congress.
    *They were originally just one bill that didn't pass so they were smade into 5 seperate bills that were each passed seperatly.
    *They 5 bills were:
    -California be a free state.
    -Texas forced to give up western land-New Mexico organized without any mention of slavery
    -Slave trade be abolished in Washington D.C.
    -Utah territory be organized without any mention of slavery. -New fugitive slave law (strict)
  • Dred Scott Decision

    *A slaved named Dred Scott lived with a nice man, Taylor Blow, who was his owner.
    *He was eventually sold to Irene and .. Emerson who didn't treat him well
    *The three laws that came from this act was that
    -Congress had no right to take peoples property.
    -African americas can not be citizens
    -All future territories couldn't be prevented from being a slave state.

    *The book was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe.
    *The book was a fictional story about the lives of seral slaves and how they were treated.
    *The book enraged the North when they erad it because that's when they first realized how bad slavery actually was.
    *Woman who "started the war".
  • Kansas/Nebraska Act

    *The people would decide between which state could be free and which state could own slaves.
    *This event lead to Bleeding Kansas
  • Bleeding Kansa

    *People from other states came to Kansas to fight for and against slavery.
    *They came from both the pro and the antislavery side.
    *This event was the first violent clash of slavery.
    *There was blood and even a few people lost their lives.
    *This showed that people weren't just fighting with words but now it's getting serious and physical.
    *The people on the pro side of slavery was armed and they were using what they had.
    *At this point, people knew that a war was about to begin.
  • Lincoln/ Douglas Debates

    *Both debating for a seat in the Senate.
    *Douglas was against slavery but belived it was up to the states o see which state would be a free state and which would be a free state.
    *Lincoln was against slavery but he belived that Congress couldn't keep slavery from happening but Congress could keep slavery from spreading.
    *The Lincoln/ Douglas debates main topic was about slavery.
  • Raid on Harpor Ferry

    *John Borwn was the organizer of the raid, he was a white man who was against slavery.
    *He organized small groups of whites to capture weapons in Virginia.
    *His goal was to arm the slaves.
    *The plan failed and those who weren't killed were tried and hanged, including John Brown himself.
    *After his death, the North saw him as a hero and it convinced the South that North was going to try to destroy slavery which scared people in the South.
  • Lincolns Election

    *He only won 40% of the peoples votes.
    *The Northern states liked Lincoln more than the people in the Southern states did because Lincoln was against slavery and the people in the South are afraid of losing their slaves.
    *Unfortunately for them, the North outvoted the South and this created tension between the two.
  • Suth Carolina Scedes

    *Lincoln and the Republicans decided that they shouldn't try to deal with slavery in the states it already was allowed in.
    *South still feared for losing their slaves.
    *When the threat to leave the Union became a real threat, South voted to secede.
    *They wanted to be their own countr.
    *Wanted to start a war.
