    Slavery begins and the South uses slave to tend to the large plantations. This is what was one of the main reasons of the Civil War, because this is one of the things that people would fight over when new states would be annexed. This was a very debated topic in the South and North.

  • The Missouri Compromise of 1820

    The Missouri Compromise of 1820
    The Missouri Compromise was meant to try and balance out the slave holding states and the free states. When Missouri applies for statehood Reprsentative Jame Tallmadge Jr. gave two ammendments to the bill the first probiting any more slaves to come in and the second required gradual emmancipation of slavery already there. They battled about it for almost a year until Maine applied for statehood they decided from then on states would be admitted in pairs "one free and one slave".

    People began to push for freedom in the late 1820's into the 1830's and 40's. It helped to get people more informed about slavery. It didn't help end slavery but it atleast got people thinking and working for the cause. It helped with atleast the beginning of the Civil War to the getting the gears moving.

    Southerners felt they were being treated unfair and different from those in the North. They though they were being taxed unfairly. They believed they had the right to nuliffy or pretty much go against the law put in place if they saw it as unconstitional. This is a reason of the civil war since this caused tension and arguements.

    Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin"
    When published this book changed the way people thought about slavery. It showed the evils of slavery. Within two years it was a nation bestseller. This book actually started out as a newspaper in 1851 and a year later puplished as a book. It is important because it made people start to think more intensly about slavery.

    In the Dred Scott decision the Supreme Court decied his plea as an African-American to become a citizen of the Unitd States. It was decided that no African or anyone with African blood could become a US citizen.

    Raid on Harper's Ferry
    Brown and 21 men went into Harper's Ferry to try and steal the federal aresenil. When they got there though the people turned on them. The first person they killed was a free black man though even though that is why they went there was to try and start a slavery revolt.

    Lincoln is voted into office and Southerners feared that he would abolish slavery and the Republicans would win. Even though he was very much against slavery, Lincoln said that he would not interfere with slavery where it was already at.

    South Carolina was the first to succeed from the Union. They had threatened it before but never went through. After they sent emissarries to other slave states asking them to nullify their contract with the Union and join them. Six more states succeeded, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Lousiana, and Texas.

    The Battle of Fort Sumter was the first battle of the American Civil War. The Confederates won, but there were no casualties. There were 80 troops for the Union and 500 for the Confererates. The reason it is important is because it is what started the Civil War.
