Causes of the American Revolution

    A series of acts passed by English Parliament. They were designed to control colonial trade and enabled Britain to collect taxes in the colonies.

    French and Indian War

    A war between the French and the colonists. They colonists wanted land in the Ohio River Valley, but so did the French. The British had a big defeat over the French, but it caused colonial struggles. This war ended in the Treaty of Paris.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    A proclamation by King George III that prohibited the colonists from settling anywhere west of the Appalachian Mountains. Lots of colonists did not agree with this.
  • Sugar and Molasses Act

    Sugar and Molasses Act
    An act passed by the British Parliament that put taxes on molasses (a major source of money), sugar and rum that was imported to the colonists. This caused the colonists to boycott British goods.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    An act that required all colonists to pay a tax on every, single piece of printed paper they used. This included legal documents, licenses, newspapers, ships papers and every other paper used.
  • Quartering Act

    Quartering Act
    An act passed by the British Parliament that asked colonists to host 1500 soldiers and supply their basic necessities. The colonists flat out refused to do this.

    Imposed a tax on glass, led, paper and tea. This led colonists to protest, smuggle, and boycott the goods.

    The Boston Massacre
    The citizens of Boston didn't like seeing the British soldiers in Boston. They ended up starting to throw things at them like bottles, rocks and snowballs. This resulted in the death of 5 civilians and the Townshend Act was repealed, but tea was still taxed.

    Committees of Correspondents
    A network of communication for the passing of activities of the British to the colonists. This was organized by Samuel Adams and also used in other colonies.

    The Tea Act
    The East India Company was losing money, so the Parliament started the Tea Act. This meant that they were not taxed to ship tea over to the colonies.

    Boston Tea Party
    The colonists disguised as Mohawk Indians boarded ships and dumped all the tea into the Boston Harbor.

    The Intolerable Acts
    Britain was determined that colonists be loyal and obey all the laws. They closed Boston's port, limited town meetings, made all trials take place in Britain or Canada, and made all colonists house soldiers.

    The Sons of Liberty made a committee of Anti-British leaders. It was a meeting of delegates from 12 of the 13 colonies.

    A second meeting of delegates from all the 13 colonies met in Philadelphia. This is where George Washington was chosen to create a Continental Army.
  • Battle of Lexington and Concord

    Battle of Lexington and Concord
    Paul Revere woke up his minutemen as fast as he could. Hundreds of minutemen marched to Concord, Massachusetts lead by Paul Revere and William Dawes. This was the First Battle of The American Revolution.
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    Battle of Bunker Hill
    Patriots surrounded Boston on every side except for Charleston. Thousands of minutemen marched to Bunker Hill at night and they shot when they saw the whites of the eyes of the British.

    Thomas Paine's Common Sense
    A pamphlet written by Thomas Paine recommending independence from Britain to the colonists.This was a persuasive pamphlet trying to gain independence.
  • Declaratory Act

    Declaratory Act
    A declaration by the Parliament that accompanied the end of the Stamp Act. It claimed that the tax control in Britain is the same in the colonies.
