    With debate over what should terriotory should enter as a slave or free state. This compromise met in the middle of the South and North opinions and stated Missouri enters as a slave state, while Maine enters a free state.

    California enters a free state, Mexican cession area divides into Utah and New Mexico. Compromise states that these areas should decide slavery based off popular sovereignty. Popular sovereignty is where the people of the state get to vote and decide whether it's going to enter a free or slave state.

    Citizens were required to capture any runaway slaves. Failure to comply would result in a $100 fine or jailed for 6 months.

    A novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. This novel showed the evils of slavery through a story about a slave being whipped to death by his owner. Northerners accepted the book, while southerners passed it off as a "book of lies."

    Divides the land into Kansas Nebraska territory. Slavery in these new states was decided by popular Sovereignty. The 2 states were split between pro and anti slavery people, leading to conflict and violence in the senate.

    John Browne and 4 of his sons ride into the town of Pottawatomie and pull 5 men out of their beds. They went on to kill these men for being pro-slavery.

    Dred Scott was a slave who lived in a free state with his owner. His owner traveled to a slave state and while there, his owner died. Now Dred Scott was a slave in a free state. He attempted to go to supreme court and become a citizen, but they ruled that he was still property and not a citizen.
