This was a religious revival held in a forest that lasted a couple of days. This led people to believe that everything they did had an impact on if they were going to heaven or not. The only reason they still had slavery after this was because they felt that God was the one who gifted them their slaves and that they weren’t real people. -
Eli Whitney created a way to clean cotton faster. This caused slaves to be able to clean cotton fastter. Since more cotton was able to be picked there was less cotton so they wanted to move west. If they were going to move west they were going to need more slaves this caused familes to split up. -
This was a time where a lot of new inventions were created and mills started becoming the next big thing. This really evolved the USA in becoming economically better. This also caused better rights for social workers because of how bad the conditions they worked in were.

Thomas Jefferson bought Louisiana from France for 15 million dollars. This helped give up more land and also helped us be able to build a railroad through our country. This also caucused a need for slaves because people were who moved their needed slaves. -
Missouri wanted to become a state, and they wanted to become a slave state. If Missouri become a slave state their would be an uneven amount of senators so they cut off a part of Massachusetts and made it Maine. They made a line causing every state above brewing free and every state being below is a slave state. This caused controversy because this was liking splitting up the north and the south just like the civil war -
Nat Turner was trying to get a bunch of slaves together to rebel and kill as many white people as they could and try to take over the Virginia senate. The day of it rained so they delayed it and some slaves told their masters about it and Nat Turner was killed
This cause people who owned slaves to to make stricter laws to patrol slaves. This always helped get rid of the myth that slaves were actually happy. -
It was a tax on things that were bought from foreign countries, so the south would start buying the north’s stuff which would help the economy. South Carolina didn’t want to pay this tax so they made it a state rule that they didn’t have to pay that tax. South Carolina seemed like he was going to start a war, but when Jackson threatened to send the army which made them back off. Eventually SC accepted the law and everything calmed down. -
It was a conflict between Mexico and America about where the Texas border was so they went to war. This added a bunch of slave states to the USA. People in the north did not like this because they was becoming more slave states than free states.

There was a lot of gold in California causing people to move up there. This caused them to be able to apply for statehood because they had enough people living there. This cause a lot of controversy on whether they should be a slave state or a free state sine the Missouri compromise line was in the middle of the state. They applied to be a free state making the south upset. -
This comprised promised 3 things California would be allowed to be a free state, it allowed the territories of New Mexico and Utah to legalize having slaves, and allowing he land that was gained after the Mexican American was alllowed or disallow slavery. This didn’t cause much controversy because the north and south both got things they wanted. The problem was it was still dividing the north and the south from each other. -
Uncle tom's cabin was a story written from the perspective of a slave. This caused a lot of people to take a different view on slavery. Since the story sold so many copies almost every in America had read it and it caused many Americans to realize how cruel slavery is and want it abolished.

It was a speech writing by a slave who escaped he was giving the speech to talk about how all Black people deserved equal rights.
This helped people see the injustice slaves were going through. It helped people see that slaves were also people who deserved rights. -
This caused two more territories to become states. The way they would become slave or free sites was by letting the people who lived there vote. This caused problems because people from other states were coming to these states and voting even though they didn’t live there. This would make them slaves states because all the people going to other states to vote wanted slavery. -
This was people who were pro-slavery and anti-slavery fighting in kanas because they wanted them to join their side of slavery or no slavery. This caused more sides to be formed. It also was the real start of violence between the north and the south.

A North Carolina senate men brutally beat a senate men from Massachusetts for giving his opinion on slavery. Nothing got done in the senate after that because people were too scared of violence. Since they didn’t fight they weren’t able to give their opinions. -
It was a case where a slave was trying to argue since he had been on free land with his owner he was now free. This ended up very controversial because he wasn’t allowed to sue since he was considered property and not a real person. People in they north didn’t like this people they felt that slaves were real people not just property.

This was a revolt where a bunch of slaves with guns. They tried raiding a building with ammunition, and were able to stay for a while but eventually got captured. The leader was captured and executed and before said the only way this would be settled would be by war. This was just another example of the two parts getting more split up. -
Abraham Lincoln got elected as president. Since he wanted slavery to be limited the north liked that he was elected. The south didn’t like this because they didn’t have an option to choose Lincoln so they felt it wanted to. -
The south was making themselves a separate territory because they didn’t like that Abraham Lincoln was the president. This obviously started the war. And the north didn’t like this because they thought the south was making a mistake.

This was the official start of fighting in the American Civil War. Union troops (northern troops) stationed at Ft. Sumter in South Carolina were attacked by the South Carolina militia. Union troops lost and surrendered the fort to the Confederate militia. Unlike previous acts of violence, this was the first time violence broke out between organized military troops. Fighting in the Civil War would continue for 4 more years after this event.
