    Invention Of The Cotton Gin
    The Cotton Gin was created to make getting the seeds out of cotton much faster and easier. Its was invented by Eli Whittney.
  • The Missouri Compromise

    The Missouri Compromise
    The Northerners and Southerners were fighting over Missouri as a free or slave state. The South won this argument and Missouri became a slave state. But, the Northerners got something in return. The government spilt Maine from Massachusetts and made Maine a free state.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    The Northerners got California as another free state, putting them on top with 16 free states. The Southerners however, with only 15 slave states, got a new law passed for them. It states that any Northerners must return all runaway slaves, and if they are helping any slaves runaway, they can recive up to 6 mouths in jail.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    A woman by the name of Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote a book called Uncle Tom's Cabin. It told a story of a man who went through slavery himself. The Southerners said that it was a bunch of lies but, the Northerners began to understand how bad slavery truely was. Europe got a hold of the book too and couldn't believe that the U.S still has slavery. So they wouldn't come to the Southerners aid if there was any wars.
  • The Kansas-Nebraska Act

    The Kansas-Nebraska Act
    There was a law passed call Popular Sovereignty. It stated that the state got to decide if they wanted to be a free or slave state. When Kansas and Nebraska got to use Popular Sovereignty, the pro and anti-slavery forces moved to Kansas to convice them to be one or the other.
  • The Dred Scott Case

    The Dred Scott Case
    A man by the name of Dred Scott was a slave traveling with his master, and they were in free terrritory. He was assuming that he was now a free man so he took his case to the Supreme Court to see if he was correct. The Court ruled that any slave is property of the owner and therefore does not have any rights.

    John Brown
    John Brown was a crazed abolitionist who was prepared to do anything to stop slavery. During the violence in Kansas, he hacked five pro slavery men to death.
  • Attack on Fort Sumter

    Attack on Fort Sumter
    After the election of 1860, the South was so pumped up and upset they began to talk about seceding (Leaving the Union). South Carolina was the first sate to leave the Union, and there was an American fort in South Carolina and were so upset they attacked it, causing us to surrender that battle. From then on, the Civil War is refered to as Brother vs. Brother.

    During this time period, the Democratic Party was split in two, one for the North, and one for the South. When Abraham Lincoln was elected as president, the South was so upset that they threatened to secede. South Carolina was the first state to secede.
