  • Regulating Waste

    Philadelphia committee led by Benjamin Franklin attempts to regulate waste disposal and water pollution.
  • Henry David Thoreau publishes Walden

  • The term ecology is coined in German as Oekologie by Ernst Heinrich Philipp August Haeckel

  • National Labor Union Founded

    This labor union was founded in attempt to create a labor group in the U.S. and mandate work-day hours.
  • 15th Amendment Added

    In 1870, the 15th amendment was added to the Constitution, stating that no voting could be abrogated by color
  • The term acid rain is coined by Robert Angus Smith in the book Air and Rain

  • American Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions Formed (AFL)

    In 1881, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions of the US was created to bring together unskilled workers, making a better life for thousands of Americans.
  • National Women's Trade Union League (NWTUL)

    Women's Trade Union League (WTUL) devoted itself to securing better occupational conditions for women and encouraging women to join the labor movement.
  • The term smog is coined by Henry Antoine Des Voeux in a London meeting to express concern over air pollution

  • Industrial Workers of the World Founded

    The Industrial Workers of the World was a radical labor union in the first decades of the 20th century. It sought to organize unskilled laborers in order to challenge and overthrow the capitalist system.
  • US Congress created the National Park Service

  • 19th Amendment Passed to Constitution

    The 19th amendment guaranteed all American women the right to vote. This was a huge milestone within women's rights and the workforce era during this time.
  • Wall Street Crash of 1929

    In fall of September 1929, there was a major stock market . Stocks fell 40% after the New York Exchange collapsed. This ended in November; however, it was the beginning of the Great Depression.
  • Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938

    This act provided for a 40-cent-an-hour minimum wage, a 40-hour maximum workweek, and a minimum working age of 16 except in certain industries outside of mining and manufacturing. These equal working regulations helped create fair labor laws in the U.S.
  • Largest Strike Wave in U.S. History

    After WWII, the working conditions in industries across the country were underpaid, unsafe, and understaffed which lead to a very high number of workers going on strike.

    The act prohibited discrimination on account of sex in the payment of wages by employers engaged in commerce or in the production of goods for commerce.
