  • Canadian Confederation

    The process by which New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and the British colonies of Canada united into one Dominion of Canada. This relates to Canadian nationalism because this was the first step for Canada to become the country it is today.
  • North West Rebellion

    An unsuccessful uprising by Metis people against the Canadian government led by Louis Riel. This resulted in the permanent enforcement of Canadian law in the West, and the subjugation of Plains Indigenous Peoples in Canada (Siksika, Cree, Ojibwe, Nakota, Dakota tribes.) This relates to Canadian nationalism because this part in Canadian history helps Canada understand the type of assimilation Aboriginals faced and how to reconcile that to let them know that they are an equal part of Canada.

    Also known as the Great War or the Depression. Resulted in the capture of Vimy Ridge. This relates to Canadian nationalism because Vimy Ridge was chosen as the site of Canada's National Memorial and it is viewed as a great military success.
  • Winnipeg General Strike

    The Winnipeg General Strike is the largest and one of the most influential strikes in Canadian history. It became the platform for future labour reforms and contributed to the development of a stronger labour movement. This relates to Canadian nationalism because this strike helped develop more peaceful but influential labour movements in Canada.

    Canada's role in WWII became one of defence of the British Isles. Canada entered the war by free will because Nazi Germany threatened the existence of Western civilization.
  • Canada Flag Adopted

    The flag was adopted by Canadian parliament and proclaimed into law by Queen Elizabeth II. This relates to Canadian nationalism because the Canadian flag is an honored symbol that brings Canadians together. (Olympic teams wear the flag, it is in buildings across Canada, Canadians who travel wear it, etc.)
  • October Crisis

    Began with the kidnapping of British trade commissioner in Montreal, James Cross by the members of the Front de Liberation du Quebec (FLQ). It then became the most serious terrorist act carried out on Canadian soil after the Minister of Immigration and Minister of Labour Pierre Laporte, was kidnapped and killed by the same group.
  • North American Free Trade Agreement

    Controversial trade pact that gradually eliminated most tariffs and other trade barriers. Now called United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA.
