    Mary I (Bloody Mary)

    Born on February 18th, 1516, Mary I was the daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. She was a devout Catholic and she married Philip of Spain. Her reign as Queen was marked by her steadfast effort to convert England back to Catholicism from Protestantism. The country was plunged into a bitter blood bath, which is why she is remembered as Bloody Mary.

    Elizabeth I

    As a young woman she had been imprisoned in the Tower of London on the orders of her half-sister, Queen Mary I because she declared herself a protestant and said that everyone should be able to follow any religion. At her death in 1603 Elizabeth left a country that was secure, and all the religious troubles had largely disappeared. England was now a first class power, and Elizabeth had created and moulded a country that was the envy of Europe.

    Mary II

    Mary II and her husband King William III ruled the country together until she passed away in 1694. On April 11, 1689, she and William were crowned joint sovereigns of England, Scotland, and Ireland. While her husband was directing military campaigns in Ireland and on the Continent, Mary administered the government in her own name

    A staunch, high church Protestant, Anne was 37 years old when she succeeded to the throne. It was during Anne’s reign that the United Kingdom of Great Britain was created by the Union of England and Scotland.

    Queen Victoria was born on May 24, 1819 and she became queen at the age of eighteen. During Victoria's reign, the British overseas Empire achieved its greatest size and power. The queen added the title Empress of India to her crown in 1876.

    Born in London in 1926, Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain is the longest-reigning monarch in British history. She celebrated 65 years on the throne in February 2017 with her Sapphire Jubilee.
