  • King James i

    First Stuart king of England who styled himself as the "King of Great Britain" James was a very strong advocate of royal absolutism and conflict increasingly self-assertive Parliament set the rebellion against his successor. Became king at 1 years of age and was a puppet of contending intriguers and faction leaders. The importance of this monarch is that he chartered the Virginia Company that founded the first permanent English colony.
  • Founding of virginia colony

    Desire to gain wealth and lesser extent to convert the natives to Christianity. Virginia became a royal colony in 1624 when King James i revoked the charter of bankrupt. Tobacco was the first profitable export and production had significant impact. This colony is important because of it being part of the first English settlement of the 13 colonies
  • Founding of Jamestown

    Founding of Jamestown
    England's King James i chartered the Virginia company, a joint-stock company that founded the first permanent English colony in America called Jamestown. James town was initially a corporate colony but later transitioned to Royal colony by 1624 due to prior issues. This founding is important because it is the start of the 13 colonies to be settled in America. Jamestown is to be the start of it all
  • Establishment of Virginia House of Burgess

    Governor George Yeardley arrived in Virginia and announced that Virginia company had voted to abolish material law and create a legislative assembly. King James i attempted to dissolve the assembly but the Virginians would have none of it. This body of government is important because it is the first legislative assembly in the american colonies.
  • Plymouth Colony

    Plymouth Colony
    Settled by English Protestants or Pilgrims established Plymouth. Plymouth was the colony of the first thanksgiving and mayflower compact. Pilgrims also spread small pox and traded with the Native Americans. This founding is important because its the first permanent Puritan settlement and also the location of where pilgrims landed in search of a place they had freedom of religion.
  • Massachusetts Bay Colony

    Massachusetts Bay Colony
    Moderate dissenters believed the Church of England could be reformed and wanted to purify the church, so they then became known as puritans. Persecution of the puritans increased when a new king emerged (King Charles i 1625) and seeking religious freedom the a group of puritans gained royal charter for Massachusetts Bay colony and later along with John Winthrop founded Boston and several other towns. This event was important because it was the first English settlement Salem.
  • Mayflower compact

    Mayflower compact was written by the male passengers of the Mayflower, consisting of puritans, adventure seekers, and tradesman. The Puritans or Pilgrims were seeking religious freedom and the compact was signed abroad the ship and known to be the first agreement for self government to be created and enforced in America. Its significance is that the Mayflower compact was and is the first democratic government to be established in the colonies.
  • King Charles i

    The persecution of puritans increased when Charles took the throne.Reign marked by religious and political strife that eventually led to civil war. King Charles i is important because he subdivided the Virginia colony and charted a new colony on side of the Chesapeake bay.
  • George Calvert (Lord Baltimore)

    Calvert had an education at Trinity oxford, was secretary to Robert Cecil, and served in the house of common. Calvert had tasks communicating King James i policy and obtaining royal supplies. Baltimore established small settlement named ferry land and two years later produced a charter. This Monarch is important because he was an English statesman who projected the founding of the North American province of Maryland, in an effort to find a sanctuary for practicing Roman Catholics.
  • Rhode Island

    Founded by Rodger Williams who was a respected puritan minister was banished due to his teachings and conflict with puritan leaders. Colony recognized the rights of Native Americans and paid them for land. Allowed Catholics, Jews, and Quakers to worship freely. Providence and Portsmouth were chartered to Williams and were created into a large colony called Rhode Island. The importance of this colony would be that the colony tolerated diverse beliefs.
  • Connecticut Colony

    Connecticut river valley attracted others who were unhappy with Massachusetts. Led by Thomas Hooker the colony of Hartford was founded. Established representative government consisting of a legislature elected by popular vote or legislature vote. Second settlement was started in 1637 in south Hartford. This colony is important because this colony established the first written constitution and was self governed
  • First Navigation Act

    A series of English laws that gave restriction to colonist on trade to England. First enacted in 1651 and throughout that time until 1663. Prohibited the colonies from trading directly with Netherlands, Spain etc.. First navigation act was in the wake of unsuccessful diplomatic attempt by Oliver St. John. Navigation act was important because they were efforts to put theory of mercantilism into actual practice
  • New York

    In order to close the gap between New England and Chesapeake colonies it would take compelling the dutch to give their colony of New Amsterdam. King granted his brother duke of York the lands lying between Connecticut and Delaware. This colony is important because the colony had allowance to speak their own language and worship who they pleased. Along with the start of no taxation without representation
  • Bacon's Rebellion

    Nathaniel Bacon, a impoverished gentlemen farmer seized upon the grievances of western farmers to lead a rebellion against Berkeley's government. Bacon raised an army of volunteers and conducted a series of raids and massacres against American Indian villages. The significance of this event is that this was the first rebellion in the American Colonies
  • King Charles ii

    Charles ii was known for converted lifestyle and feuds with parliament. During an 11 year period Charles ii was forbidden from being king and led a force into England but was quickly defeated. Charles was cynical and self indulgent and less skilled in governing than in surviving adversity. This Monarch is important because of his restoration to power of an English monarch and also for granting huge tact of land between Virginia and Spanish Florida to eight nobles (The Carolinas)
  • King James ii

    Also known as Duke of York James did not dissimulate for the sake of policy and dealt with plainly friend and foe alike and did not desire to establish Catholicism or absolutism and he offered ironclad guarantees for preservation. This monarch is important because he was the last Stuart monarch in the direct male line
  • Salem Witch Trials

    Occurred in colonial Massachusetts, more than 200 people were accused of practicing witchcraft- the devils magic- and 20 were executed. Eventually the colony admitted the trials were a mistake and compensated the families of those convicted. The importance of the event is that it became a metaphor for American society and caused a lot of self destruction.
  • Chesapeake Colonies

    Virginia and Maryland are the Chesapeake colonies. By the 1700's colonists made their fortunes through the cultivation of tobacco, setting a pattern that was followed in Maryland and the Carolina's. In political and religious matters Virginia differed from the New England colonies.Colonies became wealthy because of tobacco,more common diseases,switched to African slavery. It tells of how these two colonies were the first to limit voting to property owning men and built success of colonies
  • New Jersey

    New York was split to make New Jersey ad the sections were given to Lord Barkley and Sir George Carter. Attracted settlers to both proprietor and made generous land offers and allowed religious freedom and assembly. This event is important because it was eventually made into a single royal colony in 1702
  • Pennsylvania and Delaware

    William Penn a young convert to the Quaker faith. His father severed the king as admiral. Although the elder Penn opposed his son religious belief it was respected. Unlike other colonial proprietors Penn governed in a town founded in Delaware. settled along Delaware river. This is important because it tells of the founding and the important details such as Penn treating Natives fairly when settling in the colonies
  • Molasses Act

    the Parliament of Great Britain,imposed tax of six pence per gallon on imports of molasses from non English colonies.Created the act largely at the insistence of large plantation owners in the British West Indies. The importance of the act was to make more money for Great Britain by controlling trade among its colonies.
  • Albany congress

    A meeting of representatives by the legislatures of seven of the thirteen British colonies in British America,Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island. The significance is that British officials believed that a North American war with France was imminent and urged leaders to prepare for the common defense.
  • Pontiac's Rebellion

    loose confederation elements of Native tribes, primarily from the Great Lake region, Illinois Country, and Ohio Country who were dissatisfied with British postwar policies in the Great Lakes region after the British victory in the French and Indian War. Warriors from numerous tribes joined the uprising in an effort to drive British soldiers and settlers out of the region
  • French and Indian War

    North American conflict in a larger imperial war between Great Britain and France known as the Seven Years War. The French and Indian War began in 1754 and ended with the Treaty of Paris. The significance was that the war provided Great Britain a lot of territorial gains in North America. Disputes over the frontier policy and paying the war expenses led to discontent and to the American Revolution.
  • New Hampshire Colony

    The last colony founded in New England and originally part of Massachusetts Bay it consisted of few settlements north of Boston. New Hampshire was separated from the colonial bay in 1679 and was made a royal colony. This colony is important because it was the last of the New England colonies to be settled and had little to no problems.
  • The Carolinas

    South Carolina- A town was founded in 1670 named after their king. Economy was based on trading furs and providing food for West Indies. Large rice plantation
    North Carolina- Farmers established small self sufficient tobacco farms. Region had few good harbors, fewer plantations and reliance on slavery
    The importance of these colonies is that they are two royal colonies and were formed on original grant
  • Founding of Maryland

    Named Maryland in honor of Henrietta Maria queen consort of Charles i. Before settlement George Calvert died. Maryland was sought to establish Maryland as a Haven for Roman Catholics persecuted in England. Gave Catholics a safe place to settle. This foundling was important due to the primary reason it was established which is for Catholics and was a colony of some freedom because of the relifious toleration problems.
