    Reign of James I

    James I was the king of England and King James VI of Scotland.
  • Founding of Virginia

    The Virginia colony was founded in 1607 by several other colonists including John Smith and was funded by the London Company. The colony was named after Queen Elizabeth I of England- "The Virgin Queen".
  • Founding of Jamestown

    Decided on location of first permanent British settlement in North America, Jamestown, in Virginia.

    The Virginia House of Burgesses was formed by the General Assembly in 1619. The House of Burgesses is important because it helped institute the idea of democracy which eventually led to the American Revolution.

    The Massachusetts Bay Colony was founded by the owners of the Massachusetts Bay Company. The population's majority was Puritan as they went to Massachusetts seeking refuge from religious persecution in England.

    Commonwealth Period
