    - took education seriously; taught himself how to read
    - pursued his education at Merritt College and met Bobby Seale; they were involved with political groups at their school

    Establishment of Black Panthers
    -Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton founded the Black Panthers.
    -Created to protect aginst racist cops and police brutality.
    -Preached for revolutionary war.
    -The Black Panthers had four goals: equality in education, housing, employment, and civil rights.
    -Gave strength to the black community, and brought them together for one cause.

    -established the goals of the Black Panther Party

    -comprised of two sections: 1. what they want from the “racist leaders” of America and 2. what they believe in
    - Seale and Newton believed that the Black Community had been deprived of these benefits, and the only way to gain them back was through repayment

    Event # 6: Huey Newton's 1968 Manslaughter Trial
    Huey Newtons Manslaughter Trial
    -John Frey radioed that he was going to stop “known Black Panther vehicle.”
    -Frey had stopped Newton.
    -Officers responded to a distress call and found Frey bleeding to death and Heanes slumped in his car, wounded.
    -Police found Huey Newton in a nearby hospital.
    -Trial took place from July 15 to September 8, 1968.
    -Charged with first-degree murder, felonious assault, and kidnapping.

    -In August 1967, the FBI initiated a program to stop “Black Nationalist Hate Groups”
    -Black Panthers weren’t originally one of the targets, but J. Edgar Hoover described them as a threat to society
    -By July 1969, they became the primary focus
    the FBI were accused of using assassination against the Black Panther members
    -increased tension between both sides

    Fighting Against Police Brutality
    - Caused by angry African Amercians and violence from police officers over decades.
    -Utilized open-carry gun laws for protection.
    -When confronted by the police they cited laws that they were doing nothing wrong.
    -Willing to take to court any officer that violated their constitutional rights.
    -Recorded incidents of police brutality by following cop cars around neighborhoods.
    -Reputation for violence grew.

    Free Breakfast for Children Program
    -Black Panthers created the Free Breakfast for School Children Program.
    -Created to help the poor and black people.
    -Cooked and served to the poor inner city youth in that area.
    -The Federal government later developed similar programs to help out other schools across the country.

    -organized a march in California’s capitol to protest outlawing carrying a loaded weapon in public

    -The original Black Panther’s group does not exist anymore.
    -There was a group created called the New Black Panthers
    -Was created as a sign of the black power movement modern day.
    -Wants black Americans to have their own nation. Where they can make their own laws.
    -Wants all black prisoners in the United States to be released.
