    On a warm summer day, a gorgeous child enters the world via caesarean section. This child was born happy and healthy with no complications or birth defects. Although her parents were young, both mom and dad were very excited to meet their new bundle of joy. They welcomed her with open arms and love and were ready to begin the journey of parenthood.

    Baby Girl Goes Home
    Baby girl and mom are discharged from the hospital and go home. Baby girl and mom live with mom's grandmother. Mom's grandmother is very loving and supportive and helps take care of baby girl. Baby girl's mom is young and needs assistance learning how to care for her first child. Also, baby girl's mom works during the day until late at night and needs someone to watch her while she works. Baby girl's father is involved as well, even though her parents don't live together.

    Baby girl's mom makes baby girl a big sister! On this day, baby girl's mom goes into labor and delivers a happy and healthy baby boy without any complications. Baby girl's mom has her hands full being a young mom of two small children. Thankfully, she has lots of support from her family, as well as her children's father and his family.

    Time for Dinner
    Baby girl is hanging at home, spending time with mom, when mom gets hungry and decides to make dinner. Mom is craving macaroni and cheese and heads to the kitchen with baby girl to watch her while she cooks. Mom boils water, pours it into a bowl, and sets it aside on the kitchen table. She turns her head to grab the cheese, and before she even turns around, she hears a loud scream.

    The Noodle Incident
    While mom was grabbing the cheese for her noodles, baby girl managed to reach across the table, grab the bowl of boiling hot water, and pull it onto her left cheek, neck, shoulder and back. Baby girl started to cry inconsolably and mom rushed to her side and called 911. While mom was waiting for 911 to arrive, she put baby girl in the sink where she had warm water running on her constantly. 911 arrived within minutes and rushed her to the ED.
  • Arrives at Hospital

    Arrives at Hospital
    Baby girl arrives to the hospital and is rushed to the ED. They check her vitals and make sure she is stabilized. She is on IV fluids for fluid management and Roxicet for pain. The ED assesses her burns and notes that they are superficial partial thickness burns. They wrap her in dry, sterile gauze, and schedule her as an add-on in the OR for debridement.
  • Arrives on Unit

    Arrives on Unit
    Baby girl is transferred from the ED to an acute medical floor. Her vitals are stable and she does not appear to be in any pain. Her mom and dad are both in the room with her, and mom rocks baby girl until she falls asleep. Around-the-clock nursing care is provided and she is checked on every hour.
  • Awaiting Debridement

    Awaiting Debridement
    Baby girl wakes up 4 hours later and is crying inconsolably once again. Nurse checks her vitals, which are stable, and gives her more Roxicet. Baby girl falls back asleep 30 minutes later. Mom verbalizes feeling awful about her daughter's burns, and can't help but feel like it's her fault. Mom starts to tear up when talking to the nurse about what happened and can't help but feel incredibly guilty. Nurse and mom talk for a while, and nurse consoles mother.
  • Time for Debridement

    Time for Debridement
    Baby girl and family finally get the call they have been waiting for. It is time to go to the operating room for debridement. Debridement is the medical removal of dead, damaged, or infected tissue to improve the healing potential of the remaining healthy tissue. A nurse comes to transfer baby girl to the OR, and instead of being transferred via a cot-like bed, her dad carries her. She feels more comforted by her dad's touch and presence, and her mom follows along as well.
  • Time to Recover

    Time to Recover
    Baby girl arrives on the PACU (post-anesthesia care unit) and is doing well. A highly trained nurse on the unit monitors her vital signs and manages her pain. Baby girl's parents greet her in recovery and are overjoyed to find out the procedure went well. She does not appear to be in any pain but is still disoriented from being sedated.
  • Assessing & Monitoring

    Assessing & Monitoring
    Baby girl returns to the acute medical floor and is still disoriented from the procedure. Vitals are obtained and a full assessment is done. Her vitals are stable and her dressings are clean and dry. Her assessment also went well; it did not pose any health concerns. Immediately after assessment baby girl fell asleep.

    Mom and nurse talk and mom tells nurse that she feels bad having her grandma watch her two children while she works. Even though her grandma enjoys spending time with her great-grandchildren, baby girl's mom knows that it is a lot of responsibility for someone her age. Nurse encourages mom to discuss other options for child care, and collaboratively, they choose the best option.
  • Reducing Stress

    Reducing Stress
    Baby girl's mom plans to call her children's father's sister, whom she has a good relationship with, and ask for help watching her children while she is at work. Her children's father's sister had volunteered to help watch the children numerous times, but never really took her up on the offer since her grandmother was watching them. With her children's father's sister watching them instead, her grandma can relax and baby girl's mom won't worry about putting extra stress on her grandma.
  • Brighter Future

    Brighter Future
    Baby girl's mother talks with nurse about the neighborhood she lives in. She says that she lives in the city and wishes to someday move to the suburbs. Her and her children's father will eventually marry and move into a nicer place, allowing her family to all live together. She has a strong faith and positive attitude that gives her strength to work towards these goals and dreams. She also has a strong support system that supplies her with the courage to be ambitious and work hard.
  • Debridement Goes Smoothly

    Debridement Goes Smoothly
    While in the operating room, baby girl is given Versed in order to be sedated for the debridement. The debridement went well; it only took 15 minutes and was without complications. Mepilex AG was also put into place while in the OR. Mepilex AG is an absorbent, atraumatic dressing that absorbs exudate and maintains a moist wound-healing environment while minimizing the risk of maceration. They then wrapped her in sterile, dry gauze and sent her to the recovery room.
