New South Wales
The First Fleet arrived at Sydney cove and in 1788 the colony of NSW was proclaimed. Convicts were transported from Britain to NSW. Small pox and chicken pox killed half the aboriginal population. Finally the convicts stop coming in1840. Also Blaxland ,Lawson and Wentworth set out to find away though the Blue Mountains. -
Tasmania
Tasmania was a 40 percent convict settlement. Originally Van Dieman’s land was apart of New South Wales but 100 people signed a petition that made. Tasmania a separate colony. Later Van Dieman’s Land was changed to Tasmania. -
South Australia
Matthew Flinders charts the south coast of Australia in 1802. South Australia was made a colony from Edward Wakefield’s idea to establish a free colony for people who did not commit a crime. On the 28th of December 1836 South Australia was founded at the Old Gumtree Glenelg. -
Western Australia 1
In the 1700’s and early 1800 Britain worried the French would claim the west of Australia. Governor Darling sent major Edmund Lockyer with approximately twenty four soldiers and the same number of convicts to establish the first settlement in 1826. He landed where Albany is today. In 1827 Captain James Stirling and botanist Charles Fraser explored the Swan River area and reported the land was good for settlement. In 1829 Captain James Stirling officially claimed the colony of Western Australia -
Western Australia 2
for Britain. Stirling became Governor and ruled for ten years. -
Victoria
Unwanted settlers came from Tasmania and established a colony. John Batman signed a treaty with the Wurundjeri Group. Which was later reversed by the government of New South Wales. Melbourne became independent on July the 1st 1851. -
Queensland
The Moreton Bay Penal settlement began in1824. The government was strict about no free settlers. Also Captain Patrick was very strict and made the colony do better. Later Queen Victoria signed the letters of patent that declared it a colony. Free settlers started to arrive from 1838. -
