History of Basketball Dr. James Naismith, Inventor of BasketballNaismith worked at the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA, in which he tried to find a sport that was suitable for play inside during the cold Massachusetts winter for the students. Naismith wanted to create a game of skill and that could be played indoors in a relatively small space. Thus he invented Basketball. The first game was played with a soccer ball and two peach baskets used as goals. -
