    Growing Militarization

    all countries tried to make their armies better than all the others. in britain, at age 18 all boys were forced to serve the minimum period in one of their armed services.
  • Alliance System Building

    Countries feared getting attacked because the war was blown way out of proportion and they needed alliances to protect themselves. This began when Serbia attacked Austria and Russia sided with Serbia, Germany sided with Austria, Germany and France were against eachother and Britain was on Franes side.
  • Trench Warfare

    This was a form of occupied fighting lines, troops sheltered from the artillery in the trenches. this was considered "no mans land". This was pointless because they would fight it out in the trenches and not get anywhere else.
  • Assassination of Franz Ferdinand

    a serbian killed him to stand up against Austria-Hungary rule, the fighting for indpendence triggered the alliance system.
  • U-Boats and Unrestricted Warfare

    U-Boats were submarines that blew stuff up. unrestricted warfare was announced on jaunuary 9th 1917. it was one of the major reasons america joined war.
  • Entry of the United States- Zimmerman telegram & sinking the lusitania

    president woodrow wilson declared war against germany because of germanys violation of its pledge to stop fighting. December 7, 1917: U.S. declared war on Austria-Hungary. president wilson was reelected because of his slogan, "he kept us out of war"
  • Bolshevik Revolution

    civil war between the Bolsheviks and White Gaurd. in 1921 the old empire was reunited.
  • League of Nations

    ensured that war never broke out, if it did, the league could do three things. 1. call on the states to sit down and discuss the problem in an orderly and peaceful manner. 2. introduce economic sanctions- to financially hit the aggressor nation so they would not have to do what the league required. 3. introduce physical santions- military force could be used too put into place the leagues decision.
  • Treaty of Versailles and Treatment of Germany

    it was a peace settlement signed after WWI and many wanted Germany punished. it was signed on june 28th 1919 without germany being consulted. the treaty gave germany two choices: sign the treaty or be invaded by allies. they signed in reality they had no choice.
  • Great Depression

    wall street crashed putting the u.s. into economic depression. german economy is in crisis because of the great depression and treaty of versailles. the countries faced two options in economic crisis: stay democracies and turning to facism.
  • rise of facism in italy, germany, and japan

    facism is a dictatorship that focuses on nationalism. mussolini, hitler, hironito, and franco promised solutions to the economic problems and jobs and told their people how great they were.
  • Spanish Civil War

    spain was a divided country that was part nationalism and part republican. they were hit hard by the great depression and the army rebelled removing the republicans from power.
  • fall of france

    germany took over 6 countries in 100 days, france fell last. nazi occupied france= vichy france.
  • evacuation of dunkirk

    allied troops needed to get out of france
  • battle of britain

    germany needed to take over britain which turned into an air bombing campaign.
  • battle of stalingrad

    eastern front. cost hitler a lot of men and weapons.
  • battle of midway/battle of guadalcanal

    pacific front. in combination caused the allied momentum leading to destroying japan
  • german invasion of poland

    germany expanded into poland, they had to come up with an excuse because poland didnt have a large german population.
  • attack on pear harbor

    brought u.s. into war, slowly turned the war into the favor of the allies. the tide turns, allied wins.
  • D-Day

    people parachutted out of planes and came to get france and belgum back.
  • V-E day

    "Victory in Europe day" marked the end of hitlers war after 6 years.
  • Bombing of hiroshima and nagasaki

    worlds first atomic bomb ever dropped on japan. immediately killing 80,000 people. died from radiation exposure.
  • VJ day

    allies celerated victory over japan even though japan never gave up officially.
