Dr Evatts
Dr Evatts was elected President of the General Assembly of the United Nations. The only Australian to have ever held the position, he presided over the adoption and proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. -
Australia wants Holland out
Australia wants Holland out of the United Nations, but the liberal party, led by Dr Evatt, did not support this. In the end, Australia's efforts were lost. -

When North orea invaded South Korea in 1950, it was a United Nations force of 16 member countries that fought the war. Australia sent soldiers to be a part of the UN army. -

Peacekeeping
A vote in East Timor in August showed that 78.5% of the population wanted indepedance from Indonesia. This provoked violence. September 1999, INTERFET arrived in East Timor and was successful in dealing with the militia violence against the East Timorese people.
