Aum begins construction of a facility to produce the nerve agent Sarin at its compound. The facility was not completed however they do succeed in making supplies of Sarin for use in attacks later.

The lawyer Sakamoto Tsutsumi, his wife, Satoko, and their 1-year-old son, Tatsuhiko, were killed in their home in Yokohama because Sakamoto was engaged in a public campaign against Aum Shinrikyo.

Sarin is released in the district of Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture. Residents were people who opposed to the construction of the Aum Shinrikyo office. Hundreds of people were injured and eight were killed in the attack.

Kariya Kiyoshi was kidnapped by members of Aum Shinrikyo because he is the brother of a wealthy woman who escaped the cult. They did this to get him to tell them her whereabouts. They imprisoned him before killing him with an overdose of anesthetics and destroying his corpse.

The Tokyo metropolitan police search all of the Aum Shinrikyo facilities.

Aum ordered for an attack on Tokyo's subway systems because the authorities were getting close to the cult's facilities and they feared raids. Sarin was released on cars of 5 trains on the Kasumigasekisttion which is under the main ministries of the central government. 13 passengers and staff died and 6,000 were injured in the attack.

The Tokyo District Court ordered the dissolution of Aum Shinrikyo.
