  • Jim Crow Era

    Era where harsh laws in the south were discriminating to slaves/African Americans. 1877-1960s
  • Plessy v Ferguson

    Court case upheld the constitutionality of racial segregation laws for public facilities as long as the segregated facilities were equal in quality
  • 19th Amendment

  • Scotsburogh Boys

    Black boys accused of raping two white women on a train. Took Years for their release. They were innocent (1931-1937)
  • George Stinney Case

    Young black boy accused of murder. Received the death penalty, 70 years later he was declared innocent
  • Brown v. Board

    Court case ruled unanimously that racial segregation of children in public schools was unconstitutional.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Outlaws discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    Prohibits racial discrimination in voting
  • Civil Rights Act of 1968

    Also known as the Fair Housing Act. Defines housing discrimination as the "refusal to sell or rent a dwelling to any person because of his race, color, religion, or national origin".

    Allowed race to be one of several factors in college admission policy.

    Colleges can use race as a factor for accepting certain applicants as long as it is to promote racial diversity
