Maine becomes a free state and Missouri becomes a slave state. Split the Lousianna Purchase along 36 30 with the North being free and the South being slave. This caused more of a division in the country, which helped led to the Civil War. -

Gained fame through the Compromise of 1850. Steven Doulas was the senator from Illinois. He was responsible for the Kansas-Nebraska Act but also apart of the Democrats. Steven brought slavery to national attention. -

Angered both the north and south. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
Southerns did not want to add another free state to the union. It over turned the compromise to which happened in back in 1850. Helped cause the war between the north and the south because it caused national attention. -
The Debate at Freeport
Douglas stated that he has no problem with the supreme court. Lincoln also stated that he does not apose slavery and will not mess with fujitive slave act. This caused the war because it brought slavery to national attention. -
Debate at Charlestown
Douglas takes credit for Kansas-Nebraska Act.Lincoln was pronounced winner between the crowds powerful cheers between the two. But than Douglas gets acused of making personal attacks at Lincoln. -
Election of 1860
The south warned that if Lincoln won then they would secede. Lincoln won. Therefor the south seceded. -
Fort Sumter
Fort Sumter was attacked in 1861 on April 12th that started the war. The fort was built in 1829 and still unfinished in 1861. Stood at the enterance of the bay outside Charleston South Caroline.
