    Thomas Jefferson was a man elected to be president who was not a Federalist. He believed that he could "fix" America by changing everything the Federalist's did before him.
  • Lousiana Purchased

    The Louisiana Purchase was the purchase made by Thomas Jefferson in the early 1800s. He purchased the Louisiana territory and made it part of America.
  • War of 1812

    The War of 1812 was the war between the British and the Americans. The British continued to invade different places in America and they caused a war.
  • McCulloch vs. Maryland

    McCulloch vs. Maryland was the court case in which the chairman of the National Bank (McCulloch) sued the state of Maryland because they had placed a tax on loans. Because of this, people got angry and decided not to use the bank, which caused the bank many problems.
  • Missouri Compromise

    The Missouri Compromise was the compromise between the North and South that declared that any state north of Missouri would be a free state and any Southern state would be a slave state. There was a line drawn across the entire United States (what it was at the time).

    Andrew Jackson was a man elected who was different from the Federalists and from Jefferson. He believed America would be best if people made their own decisions and if they had a government that wasn't too controlling.

    The Liberator was a newspaper that was published by an abolitionist about how slavery should be abolished ASAP.
  • Nullification Crisis

    The Nullification Crisis was the crisis between the federal government and South Carolina about taxes.
  • Toqueville Publishes Democracy in America

    Toqueville came to America back in the 1830s and wrote a book about American Democracy to show Europeans how everything was run.
  • Emerson Publishes Self-Reliance

    This book is about details and facts that Emerson gathered throughout his life (which he then published).
  • Dorothea Dix visits her first jail with insane inmates

    Dorothea Dix went to an insane asylum and saw the horrible mistreatment of the people there. She decided from then on that she would work to take better care of the people in the asylums.
  • Fredrick Douglass Publishes his autobiography

    Fredrick Douglass was a run away, educated slave who published an autobiography of his life story. The book was intelligent and didn't seem like it was published by a former slave.
  • Seneca Falls Convention

    Seneca Falls was the convention of women all across the US coming together to discuss women's rights.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    The Fugitive Slave was the law given by the Supreme Court about being allowed to retrieve runaway slaves.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin Published

    Uncle Tom's Cabin was a book written by Harriett Beecher Stowe about slaves and their lives. It was a true story but with fictional characters. It really opened the eyes of some people about how awful slavery truly was.
  • Thoreau Publishes Walden

    Emerson Thoreau published Walden which I believe is the story of how he basically lived in nature all by himself on the banks of Walden Pond by himself for awhile.
  • Whitman Publishes Leaves of Grass

    Leaves of Grass is a poem written by Walt Whitman about how he loves both women and men, and how they are both awesome.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    The Dred Scott decision was the decision made by the Supreme Court to allow white slaveowners to invade the North to retrieve their escaped slaves. Slaves were also deemed allowed to be brought anywhere as "baggage" so to speak.
  • John Brown Attacks Harper's Ferry

    John Brown was an abolitionist who also wanted slavery gone ASAP, so he took some people and went around killing slaveowners. His goal was to get as many slaves as he could to Harper's Ferry in order to take over their armory and kill as many slaveowners as possible.
  • Abraham Lincoln Elected

    Abraham Lincoln was an average guy who was elected to be the 16th president. He was the president during the Civil War. He wanted to "keep the marriage" between the north and south (meaning he did not want to let the south secede.)
