She was born in Alford, Lincolnshire, England. Her birth name was Anne Marbury. She was born a Puritain. Her father was Francis Marbury and her mother was Bridget Marbury.

Her father was a discredited Angelican Clergyman, who along with her mother, raised her to questioin authority, along with this she learned about herbs and medicine from her mother. In 1630 she married a merchant William Hutchinson, andthe two became followers of Angelican minister John Cotton.
