  • Capital Change

    The U.S. capital is moved from Philadelphia to Washington D.C. The senate agreed that they needed to move the capital to a new area.
  • Election of 1800

    The election of 1800 was between Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. John Adams won, and became the second President of the United States.
  • Slave Importation Outlawed

    Congress, using powers granted by Article I Section 9 of the Constitution, banned importation of slaves in 1808. Akthough this did not affect those already there in the United States nor those yet to be born.
  • Battle of New Orleans War Ends

    The Battle of New Orleans was the final major battle of the War of 1812. American forces commanded by Major General Andrew Jackson, defeated an invading British army intent on seizing New Orleans and the vast territory that the United States aquired in the Louisiana purchase,
  • Erie Canal

    Construction began on July 4, 1817 at Rome, New York. The first 15 miles from Rome to Utica opened in 1819. At that rate the canal would not be finished for 30 years.
  • The Treaty of Saginaw

    Indians gave up one sixth of Michigan. The treaty reserved several smaller tracts of land for Indian use within the ceded territory.
  • Alabama becomes a slave state

    In the year of 1819 Alabama was admitted as a slave state, which brought the number of slaves states and free states to equal numbers. Alabama was known for its fertile soil for the surging cotton crop, and soon became one of the major destinations for African-American slaves.
  • First Public Railroad System

    Construction began on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. This is the first public railroad in the U.S. It was a key factor in America's westward expansion and it made trade much easier and less expensive. This threw America into the Industrial Revolution as well as changed the face of this once primitive land.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850 admits California as free state but Fugitive Slave Law enacted. Also Millard Fillmore is elected President.
