French and Indian War
Battle between the French and the British over more land, specifically the Ohio River Valley. The British won the war and got more land in North America. -
Proclamation of 1763
Proclamation said that British colonists could not move to the reserved land for American Indians, west of the Appalachian Mountains. The colonists were upset by this proclamation. -
Sugar Act
The Sugar Act taxed sugar, coffee, and clothing. These taxes were passed to help pay the war debt from the French and Indian War. -
Stamp Act
The Stamp Act taxed paper goods. The Stamp Act Congress met and decided to boycott British goods. The Stamp Act was then repealed. -
Townshend Acts
These acts passed a tax on paper goods, paint, lead, and glass. -
Boston Massacre
Five colonists were killed by British soldiers in Boston. This event united many colonists in their dislike for England. -
Tea Act
This law allowed the East India Company of Britain to sell tea in America at a very low price. This meant that colonists had to choose between paying less for tea and paying British taxes, or paying more money for smuggled tea. -
Boston Tea Party
In protest of the Tea Act, the Sons of Liberty dumped British tea into the Boton harbor. -
Intolerable Acts
As a punishment for the Boston Tea Party, these acts stopped trade between Boston and Britain, ended town meetings, and forced colonists to allow British soldiers to live in their homes. -
First Continental Congress
Delegates from all colonies but Georgia met and decided to write a letter to King George III asking for fair treatment and to repeal the Intolerable Acts. Delegates also decided to stop trading with Britain and to train for battle. -
