After the British evacuated Boston, George Washington guessed right that their next target was going to be New York. Washington waited with his troops throughout June and was almost sure that the attack would come in early July and be on Manhattan. When General Howe offered a pardon to the rebels, Washington called out "Those who have committed no fault want no pardon." -

The winter was hard on the Americans, but the main British force was settled in New York. The British had troops in Princeton and Trenton. Washington saw a chance to get the British by surprise . On Christmas night Washington led 2,400 across the icy river to surprise the enemy the next day. -

The British surrender at Saratoga brought the French into the war as American allies in February 1778. The British received orders to follow a defensive strategy and consolidate forces in New York. Then the army left Philadelphia and they marched North. After a 40-hour halt in Monmouth the army moved out. -
