    The Battle of Lexington and Concord was the first battle of the American Revolution. The British were searching for guns and ammunition in Concord. Eight Colonists were killed in Lexington.
  • Battle of Fort Ticonderoga

    Battle of Fort Ticonderoga
    The battle of Fort Ticonderoga was the first battle in the American Revolution that the Colonists won. Fort Ticonderoga served as a key point of access to both Canada and the Hudson River Valley. Benedict Arnold joined Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys of Vermont in an early morning attack on the fort, startling and capturing the sleeping British army. This battle would give the Continental Army needed ammunition to be used in the future battles.

    After the British charged the hill twice, the British won when the colonists ran out of ammunition. More than 1,000 British died or were wounded. This battle gave the Colonists confidence and the British found out that it was going to be a long, hard war against the Colonists. Although the battle is called the Battle of Bunker Hill, most of the fighting was actually done on Breeds Hill.

    The battle of Long Island is one of the battles that the Colonists lost. A patriot named Nathan Hale disguised himself as a school teacher in order to spy on the British, but was caught and then hanged as punishment. The Patriots fought well at Long Island, but were not able to overtake the bigger and stronger British force.
  • Battle of Trenton

    Battle of Trenton
    George Washington crossed the Delaware River with the main body of the Continental Army the night before the battle. Washington was planning a sneak attack on Hessian soldiers. At the end of the battle, 22 Hessians had been killed, 83 wounded, and 800-900 captured. Two Colonists froze to death and 5 were wounded during the battle.

    The Battle of Saratoga lasted almost a month and finished on October 7, 1777. The Battle of Saratoga was an American victory and was also a turning point in the war. After this battle the French helped the Colonists because it appeared like the Colonists might have a chance against the British.
  • Battle of Monmouth

    Battle of Monmouth
    During this battle 350-500 Colonists were killed, captured, or wounded. Approximately 65-300 British were killed, 170-770 were wounded, and 60 were captured. Cornwallis thought he could destroy the Colonists, but Washington moved his troops to higher ground to keep the British in their position. Then Washington’s troops blasted the British line, causing Cornwallis to retreat. Washington tried to hit the tired back lines of the British, but darkness forced the end of the fighting.

    The Battle of Cowpens was yet another victory for the Colonists. The battle took only about an hour and took place in a farmer’s pasture. Twelve Colonists were killed and sixty were wounded. About 110 British were killed, 229 wounded, and 829 were captured or missing.
  • Battle of Yorktown

    The Battle of Yorktown lasted until October 18, 1781.
    The Battle of Yorktown was yet another American victory. After this battle, the British Commander Cornwallis surrenders to George Washington, making the Battle of Yorktown the last battle of the American Revolution.
