    Common sense was a document for all the American colonies to declare independence from Great Britain. It was also written by Thomas Paine. Many people thought that they would reason with the king and he would reason with them. Common Sense was so powerful that it persuaded so many colonists to break away from the king. The first time it was published was in January 10, 1776, six months before the Declaration of Independence.
  • Virginia Declaration of Rights

    This document was written by George Mason in May 1776. The Virginia Declaration of rights consists of 16 articles including the rights to life, liberty, and property. The Virginia Declaration of Rights was adopted before the Declaration of Independence, so it is the oldest constitutionally based protection of American rights.

    The Treaty of Paris formally ended the Revolutionary war for independence. The treaty was signed by Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, John Jay and Henry Laurens on September 3, 1783. After the surrender of General Cornwallis the British government finally became willing to negotiate peace.
