    First Colony of Settlers - Jamestown
    The first settlers in the United States (with the exception of the native American cultures that came long before the Europeans) settled in Jamestown in what is now Virginia. 144 men and women left England and traveled to the New World to claim land for King James I and to begin a new life. Most of the original colony did not survive - George Percy returned to England in 1612 and wrote his observations of the first months in the new settlement. MK
