Gabriel's Rebellion
Inspired by the rebellion in Haiti, a slave named Gabriel conspired to end Virginia slavery. However, he was delayed by the weather and betrayed by some of his followers and executed. -
The Election of 1800
After the Sedition and Alien Acts, President Adams had lost the faith of the American people. Therefore, the election of 1800 gave the people an opportunity to send him on his way. Thomas Jefferson won the election and it was viewed as a huge success. -

The Second Great Awakening was a time when America could truly be considered a Christian nation. Great revivals took place and much good came out of in the form of temperance movements and abolitionist awareness; however, it did produce some strange people and movements such as the Mormons, Shakers, Charles Finney, and Transindetlists. -
Marbury vs. Madison
Immediately before leaving office, John Adams sought to put sympathetic judges in vacant supreme court position. When Thomas Jefferson came to power his administration refused to give those positions to the appointed officers. William Marbury sued the government for the position he had been promised but lost. -
The Louisiana Purchase
Rebellious slave uprisings in Haiti had discouraged Nepolion from holding territory in the Americas and he proposed to sell it to Jefferson. Despite his misgivings considering its constitutionality, Jefferson agreed and purchased the Louisiana territory for $15 million dollars. -
The Embargo Act
In an attempt to discourage the English from thier attacks on American trading ships and impressing thier sailors, Jefferson closed all American ports to international trade. Unfortunately, England could not care less. -
The Battle of Tippecanoe
Possibly prompted by the English, Indians under the leadership of Tecumseh and his brother Tenskwatawa revolted against the Americans. They were defeated at this battle and thier power was greatly diminished. -

The British Navy, being stressed by the Napoleonic wars, took to impressing American sailors to fill thier ranks. In addition, it was suspected that they were behind the Indian uprisings in the west. After Jeffersons Embargo act proved ineffective, America when to war with England for a second time. -
The "Star Spangled Banner" was written
Watching from an English ship as it bombarded Fort McHenry, Poet Francis S. Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner to rejoice how the fort stood against the attack and was not defeated. -
The Depression of 1819
In America's growing market economy, there were ups and downs. This depression was caused by speculation in land. -
The Missouri Compromise
This debate centered around whether Missouri should be admitted as a slave state or a free state. In the end, the remaining Louisiana purchase was divided along a 30 36 degrees line allowing states below that line to be slave states and states above the line to be free. Missouri was allowed to be a slave state and Maine was admitted as a free state and the compromise delayed civil war. -

During this time, over five million immigrants made thier way to America. These were primarily Irish, Greman, and Jewish people seeking a better life and religious freedom. -
The Erie Canal
This Canal linked the Great Lakes with the Hudson River causing New York to become a thriving trading city and flourishing port. -
Andrew Jackson Elected President
As "Old Hickory" and "The Hero of New Orleans", Andrew Jackson won the election on popular favor as a war hero and tough man. His presidency was known for his dislike of the United States Bank and the Nullification Crisis. -
Joseph Smith publishes the Book of Mormon
Claiming to have received a vision from God warning him not to become a part of any current church and telling him where to find some extra-biblical texts, Joseph Smith founded the Morman cult on these teachings in the Book of Morman. -
The Indian Removal Act
Signed by President Andrew Jackson, this act allowed the relocation of Indian tribes beyond the Mississippi territory. -
The Trail of Tears
In accordance with the Indian Removal Act, the Cheeroke were relocated in what was to be one of the most infamous removals. of the 16,000 Indians who began the journey, only 10,000 completed it alive. -
Nat Turner's Rebellion
As one of the deadliest slave uprisings, Nat Turner's rebellion was lead through religious passion and the charismatic leadership of Nate Turner. It was unsuccessful and cause a greater tension and fear in the south and greater restrictions on slave's religious gatherings. -
The Treaties of Velasco
After being defeated by Sam Houston and his followers, Santa Ana signed the Treaties of Velasco, which forced Mexico to recognize Texas as its own republic. -

This Depression was caused by speculation in Land and Slaves. -
Labor Unions are Legalized
The Massachusetts supreme court ruled that the labor unions which had been springing up since 1825 were lawful and an appropriate means for the wage workers to protect thier interests. -
Child Labor Laws
In the face of increasing Child Labor in factories across the country, the government began passing legislation limiting the number of hours a child could work and eventually prohibiting all children under twelve from working in the factories. -
Texas Becomes a State
As his final presidential act, John Tyler established Texas as a slave state, upsetting the free/ slave state ration and promoting war with Mexico. -

After disagreeing over the boundary between Texas and Mexico, America declared war on Mexico and won when they invaded Mexico City. In the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which followed, America got California, Utah, Nevada, most of Arizona, part of New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming paying $15 million dollars in return. -

The Know-Nothing Party
Fearing that the increasing numbers of immigrants descending on America would affect politics and most especially establish Catholicism in America, the Know-Nothing party was formed to push anti-Catholic and anti-immigrant legislation and ideas and they were largely responsible for the drop in immigration in 1855. -

This Depression was caused by speculation in railroad bonds. -

This is one of the bloodiest wars in American history and was caused by the southern states desire to maintin thier rights and slavery and the Norths desire to maintain the union and abolish slavery.
