  • French and Indian War

    This war lead to the revolution, as it lead to increased taxation of the colonists.
  • Boston Massacre

    5 people die when a British regiment fire into a crowd in Boston
  • Signing of the Declaration of Independence

    The Declaration was the first major document uniting the colonies against the British. It cited many of the grievances against the British.
  • End of the Revolutionary War

    The war ended after the Treaty of Paris was signed. This began America as a recognized country.
  • Constitution is ratified by nine states

    New Hampshire ratifies the Constitution, putting it in as the law of the land.
  • George Washington gets sworn in

    George Washington is sworn in as the first U.S. President.
  • Cotton Gin is invented

    Slavery is reignited with this invention by Eli Whitney
  • Louisiana Purchase

    The Louisiana purchase practically doubled the U.S. land total.
  • British burn the white house

    This was during the peak of the War of 1812. Thankfully, Madison’s wife got most of the important documents out of the house.
  • The Missouri Compromise gets put in the law.

    The Missouri Compromise, which only temporarily solved the issue of slavery, was put into law in 1820
  • Indian Removal Act is signed

    Andrew Jackson signed this law which led to Cherokee removal, the Seminole Wars, and the Trail of Tears.
  • Nat Turner leads a slave revolt

    In 1831, Nat Turner leads a major slave revolt in Virginia, leading to several deaths.
  • The Gold Rush of 1849

    The Gold Rush of 1849 begins when a James Marshall discovers gold in California.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act; “Bloody Kansas”

    The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 allowed the two territories to vote on the issue of slavery in their states, leading to Bloody Kansas, where people lost lives over their opinions.
  • South Carolina secedes

    In late 1860, South Carolina secedes due to abolitionist Abraham Lincoln is elected, beginning the civil war.
  • Battle of Antietam

    The bloodiest battle in American history. One of several turning points in the war.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    This 3 day battle was one of the bloodiest in American history.
  • The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln

    The assassination of Lincoln was only a few days after the war ended. Lincoln was killed by John Wilkes Booth.
  • Andrew Johnson begins impeachment process

    In 1868, the impeachment of Johnson begins due to, “several high crimes and misdemeanors”. This is the first time a president is even considered to be impeached.
  • End of Reconstruction

    Reconstruction ends, but the scars of the civil war lives on.
