    The Louisiana Purchase is made up of land stretching from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains and is around 830,000 sq. Miles. This doubles the size of the US and cost 15,000,000 dollars. This agreement was between France and the US.
  • Napoleon Emperor of Europe

  • Lewis and Clark Expedition

    They start their journey from St. Louis in 1804 and come back with new discoveries in 1806. They found a route to the Pacific Ocean.
  • James Madison is the 4th President

  • Congress Declares War on England

    America is now fed up with the British interference over trade, shipping, and Westward expansion, so they declare war.
  • Burning Washington

    The British burn the White House, the Library of Congress, and much more of the Capitol
  • Star Spangled Banner

    Francis Scott Key writes the Star Spangled Banner while he watches the attack on the British at Fort McHenry in Baltimore. The American Flag stands high battered with ripping in the Morning. This becomes the National Anthem.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    The Treaty of Ghent is signed officially ending the War of 1812
  • Monroe is the 5th President

  • Florida Purchased

    Florida is purchased from Spain and the Savannah is the first steamboat to go across the Atlantic.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Maine is admitted into the union as a free state and Missouri is admitted as a slave state in an effort to balance the number of slave vs. free states in the union. The line of separation from slave and free states is latitude 36º30'.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    Publicly declaring a no-tolerance policy with England's interference on the northern Hemisphere the Monroe Doctrine almost splits England and America as 2 separate continents who will stay within their hemisphere.
  • Erie Canal is finished

    This links the Hudson River to Lake Erie greatly helping the economy up north.
  • First Railroad

    The railroad stretches from Baltimore, Maryland to Ohio.
  • American Population

    After the first American Census, the population is around 4 million citizens in America
  • Jackson is the 7th president

  • Removal Act

    President Jackson signs the Removal Act which forces the Native Americans living in the southeast to move to lands west of the Mississippi River. After the act is finished, Jackson has relocated almost 50,000 Natives although many have died on the journey.
  • Texas declares independence from Mexico

  • The Alamo

    All Texans defending the Alamo are killed during a siege by the Mexican Army.
  • Van Buren is the 8th President

  • Cherokee Trail of Tears

    Moved from Georgia to Oklahoma, 15,000 Cherokee Indians make the long march and almost 4,000 die along the way naming their march the Cherokee Trail of Tears.
  • Harrison is the 9th President

    He dies one month later and his Vice President John Tyler takes over. Harrison is known for having the longest inauguration speech and the shortest presidency.
  • Morse Code

    Samuel Morse sends the first telegram reading 'What hath God wrought?" from Washington to Baltimore. This greatly aids in communication in the civil war.
  • Polk is the 11th President

  • Manifest Destiny

    The term first appears in a magazine article written by John O Sullivan and expresses the fact that the US is destined by God to expand across the Continent.
  • Mexican War

    The US declares war on Mexico to try and gain California and the South West. After the war, the US is the strongest nation and Polk is on a path to a strong presidency. But, the US is closer than ever to the Civil war. Mexico has lost many lives and half of its territory.
  • Borders of Texas

    Mexico agrees to a payment of 15 million for the territory consisting of California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and Wyoming. Texas Bordars are now recognized as the edge of the Rio Grande.
  • Seneca Falls

    The first Women's convention held in New York
  • Gold Rush

    Gold is discovered in Sutter's Mill in California. The rush to find Gold is at full peak by 1849
  • Zachary Taylor is the 12th President

  • Comprise of 1850

    It is decided that California will enter the Union as a free state and Utah and New Mexico will be decided by popular soverignty. Slave trade in Washington D.C. is prohibited. A much stricter fugitive slave law is passed.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Harriet Beecher Stowe publishes Uncle Tom's Cabin bringing recognition to the horrors of slavery across the nation. It is one of the most influential works that brought awareness to the anti-slavery movement.
  • Pierce is the 14th President

  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    Congress passes this act establishing the new states to enter the Union.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    The Supreme Court Decision states that States have their own freedom to decide on the issue of slavery and freedom within their own state, but Congress decides that slaves are not citizens.
  • Buchanan is the 15th President

  • First Lincon Douglas Debate

    During the Illinois state election, Lincon and Douglas have 7 formal debates which lasted many days each. The debates focus on emotion and appealing to people rather than a fact only stance.
  • Abraham Lincon is the 16th President

  • South Carolina is the first to secede from the Union.

  • Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana all secede from the Union

  • The Confederate States of America Established

    The seceding states have formed an Alliance, which is unconstitutional, creating the Confederate States of America.
  • Jefferson Davis is the First president of the Confederate States

  • Texas Secedes from the Union and Joins the Confederate States.

  • The Civil War begins

    The Confederates have many people willing to fight, but the north is more organized with more resources including railroads which can easily ship soldiers to battlegrounds. The Confederates attack Ft. Sumter starting the war.
  • More States Succeed

    Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee succeed from the Union. The Emancipation proclamation is issued and frees slaves in the Confederate States.
  • Homestead Act

    This allows people to claim their land if they have lived on it for 5 years, up to 160 acres.

  • Robert Lee surrenders to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse.

    Lincoln is assassinated by John Wilkes Booth and Andrew Johnson the Vice takes over the presidency.

    The 13th amendment prohibiting slavery is ratified.

    For 7.2 million dollars, at 2 cents an Acre, Alaska is now American Territory.
