Paul's friend Kemmerick dies leaving his boots to Meuller. This leads Paul to reflect on the fact that the soliders are forced by their circumstances to be concerned only with the practical.

At some point before he is injured Paul is given 6 weeks leave (although this does not line up with Remarque's life) during this time he realises that the people at home cannpt understand what it is like at the Front and he feels issolated. He also encounters Russian prisoners of war and reflects on how they are less his enemy than his own generals.

Paul becomes trapped in a shell whole and is foced to kill a French soldier with a knife. This leads Paul to feel terrible and realise that the soldier is not unlike himself. He makes promises to contact the soldier's family that he knows he can never keep.

On this day Erich Maria Remarque was wounded by shrapmetal in the same fashion as Paul and it is there fore likely that this coorespondes to Paul's injury in the book.

Paul returns to the front at the beginning of the Summer of 1918 having recovered from his injuries.

Conditions become increasingly bad for German soldiers at the front. Eventully they begin to loose ground to the Allies following a ne offensive. As time goes on more and more of Pauls friends die, by the end only Paul and Kat remain.

An Allied offensive in France finally breaks the deadlock an begins to push the Germans back.

Kat is wounded by shrapmetal and Paul frantically tries to get him to a medical station. Kat dies just as they are about to reach the station.

Paul is given 14 days to recover from inhaling poison gas. He reflects on how he wants to return home but cannot feel right there.

Paul is killed on a quiet day in October just before the end of the war.
