    Prince Henry, the prince of Portugal became aware of the sub-Saharan trade routes and became obsessed with learning more about Africa and its riches. He began to sponsor voyages into the Atlantic and down the coast of Africa.

    Portuguese explorer, Bartolomeu Dias set off in search of a water route to Asia. He ultimately failed in this expedition, but he became the first explorer to round the southernmost tip of Africa and prove that the Atlantic and Indian oceans flowed into each other.

    Christopher Columbus set sail on his fourth, and final voyage

    Christopher had completed three voyages so far and had yet to complete his intended goal. Though he made some remarkable discoveries in his past voyages, such as the discovery of the Americas, he had yet to achieve his intended goal, which was to find a water route to Asia, so that was the main purpose of the fourth voyage. Ultimately, he failed but was still able to explore and make discoveries in unmarked parts of Central America.

    Spanish explorer and conquistador Hernan Cortés landed on the coast of Mexico with 600 men, 16 horses, and a few cannons. They then captured and demolished the capital city of Tenochtitlán in a brutal assault in 1521.

    Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who was the first European to circumnavigate the globe, proving that the world was round and larger than thought, discovering new oceans and land, and proving that all oceans and landmasses were connected.

    Hernan Cortes, a European explorer, finally conquered the Aztec tribe. After being mistaken for the great god Quetzalcoatl, he was let right into the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan, but after tensions rose, war broke out between the Aztecs and Cortes, which resulted in an Aztec massacre and a successful conquer for Spain, from Cortes.

    French explorer Giovanni da Verazzano sailed along the coast of North America and discovered many islands and bays that would be useful to inhabitants in the future. His explorations gained more insight into European knowledge about the East Coast of North America.

    Francisco Pizzaro founded Lima, Peru

    On his conquests in South America, Francisco Pizzaro founded Lima, Peru which he originally named Ciudad de los Reyes which means “City of the Kings”. He had previously destroyed the old capital Incan capital Cuzco and replaced it with Lima.

    French explorer, Jacques Cartier, explored the St. Lawrence River as far inland as modern-day Montreal. His discoveries and explorations laid the basis for later French claims of the New World, or North America.

    Janszoon was sailing for the Dutch East India Company which sent him to find more islands and people to trade with in the East Indies. He sailed past New Guinea and southward, landing in Queensland, on the northern tip of Australia.

    Henry Hudson, an English explorer, was originally hired by the Dutch East India Company to find a short passage to India. This ended as a failure, but in the process, he made many discoveries in America, including the Hudson River, which he used as a major highway on his travels.

    Abel Tasman discovered Tasmania and New Zealand

    Tasman sailed for the Dutch East India Company, which sent him to explore the ocean east of Australia. During his voyage, he discovered and sighted several islands including Tasmania, New Zealand, Fiji, and Tonga.

    When James Cook the European explorer was sailing from Tahti to the mainland of northwest America, he discovered the Hawaiian Islands which he named the Sandwich Islands. He landed on the island of Kaua’i being the first European to make contact with the locals.
