Columbus' Journey is paid for
Queen Isabella finally gave in on paying for Columbus' journey because if he discovered a route to Asia for trade, it would bring power to Spain. They would control a trade route. She gave Columbus the money to hire sailors, buy a boat, and get food and water. -

Americas Discovered
Christopher Columbus wanted to find a trade route to Asia. He thought that you could just sail across the world to get there. He pleaded Queen Elizabeth to give him the money and she agreed. He set sail and saw land later on. He landed and called the land The Indies. (He thought that he arrived in India but it really was Central America.) He explored Central America and then returned to Spain. -

Trade route to India
People had been wanting a faster way to get to India. Boat was much faster than land travel. Vasco Da Gama followed Bartolomeu Dias' route and discovered a way to India by boat. You had to travel around the tip of Africa. -

Aztec Empire...DEFEATED
Cortes wanted wealth and fame. He went to America to find gold. He found tribes and they warned him of the Aztecs. They were an empire that had a rule over surrounding tribes. Cortes went to the Aztec empire. The ruler greeted him but he threw him in prison. War broke out, but Cortes eventually won. He returned home empty handed, but with fame in the Americas. -

Pacifc Ocean is discovered
A sailor named Balboa wanted wealth like other sailors. He sailed to Central America in search of gold. He landed on present day Panama. He sailed west from there and reached the Pacific Ocean. With this new discovery, people could sail the world. -

World Route
Ferdinand Magellan believed that you could sail around the world. He started from Spain, sailed around the tip of South America, traveled through Oceania, And went up the coast of Africa to Spain. Unfortunately, he died in a battle with the islanders in Oceania. -

Hernan Cortes wanted wealth and fame for him and his family. He heard about America and sailed to America. He landed in Mexico and explored the land. After he didn't find wealth or gold, he claimed Mexico for Spain and sailed back home. -

Now that explorers have brought much information to Spain, they wanted to colonize America. They claimed present day Mexico, California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Florida, and Texas. -

De Soto went to America because he wanted riches and to find gold. He looked for gold in the southeast. The states today included; Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi. Alabama, Georgia, North and South Carolina, and Tennessee. -

After Cortes' victory, many explorers wanted to find gold and riches. A man named Francisco Pizarro went to South America. There, he found the Inca Empire. He asked them where gold was, but they didn't tell him. In anger and frustration, Pizarro fought and defeated the Inca Empire.
