14th Amendment
Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution is ratified, defining citizenship. Individuals born or naturalized in the United States are American citizens, including those born as slaves. This nullifies the Dred Scott Case (1857), which had ruled that blacks were not citizens. -
15th Amendment
Fifteenth Amendment to the Constitution is ratified, giving blacks the right to vote. thi is very signicant because it gave them freedom to vote. It was a huge amendment intrinsic to blacks and their future. The effect of it, is that we have a black President, which would have never been guessed by them. -
Plessy vs Ferguson
Plessy v. Ferguson: This landmark Supreme Court decision holds that racial segregation is constitutional, paving the way for the repressive Jim Crow laws in the South. This is very signicant because it rid Jim Crow Laws, which were very abusive and harsh to African Americxans.I selected it because it is one of the biggest African American Supreme Court cases of all time. It has rich history. -
Founding of NAACP
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is founded in New York by prominent black and white intellectuals and led by W.E.B. Du Bois. For the next half century, it would serve as the country's most influential African-American civil rights organization, dedicated to political equality and social justice. It has a huge impact on history because as time was going forward, blacks were getting more rights and more helful organizations. I chose it for its signicance, even today. -
Harlem Renaissance
The Harlem Renaissance flourishes in the 1920s and 1930s. This literary, artistic, and intellectual movement fosters a new black cultural identity. This was important because for the first time, African Americans were leaving the south and expanding their population. This era, was when art and music was very diverse and they took their newfound talents to New York. -
Jackie Robinson breaks barrier
Jackie Robinson breaks Major League Baseball's color barrier when he is signed to the Brooklyn Dodgers by Branch Rickey.Jackie Robinson was the first African American baseball player and his significance was that many black baseball players followed him because of his courage. Today, his number retired and only 1 player holds it, Mariana Rivera. -
Brown vs Board of education
Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kans. declares that racial segregation in schools is unconstitutional. It is very significant to education because of what it did. It allowed them to enter into public schools. This is also another big Supreme Court case, which was won. -
Emmett Till is murdered
A young black boy, Emmett Till, is brutally murdered for allegedly whistling at a white woman in Mississippi. Two white men charged with the crime are acquitted by an all-white jury. They later boast about committing the murder. The public outrage generated by the case helps spur the civil rights movement. the signifcance would help develop into an outrage for rights and many movements. -
March on Washington
The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom is attended by about 250,000 people, the largest demonstration ever seen in the nation's capital. Martin Luther King delivers his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. The march builds momentum for civil rights legislation. This was the backing support of civil rights, which was very important. -

Malcolm X, black nationalist and founder of the Organization of Afro-American Unity, is assassinated. -

First Supreme Court Justice
President Johnson appoints Thurgood Marshall to the Supreme Court. He becomes the first black Supreme Court Justice. The Supreme Court is one of the highest positions in the world, and to be a job in this position was very important. -
First Black President
The first African American President is elected in 2009. Former Senator of Chicago, Obama gained population through the youth and many minorities. The importamce of this is that a black President is elected. Obama is a liberal supporter.
