Baba and Amir leave Afghanistan to go to Pakistan because it was no longer safe. They traveled with many others in an attempt to leave, "There were others, in all about a dozen, including Baba and me, sitting without suitcases between our legs, cramped with these strangers in the tarpaulin-covered cab of an old Russian truck" (Hosseini 110).

Baba and Amir arrive in America with hopes of a fresh start, " For me, America was a place to bury my memories. For Baba, a place to mourn his" (Hosseini 129).

About 2.8 Afghans have fled the war to Pakistan. Around 1.2 million fled to Iran.

Baba dies leaving Amir alone in America. Amir and his wife say goodnight to Baba, although he dies in his sleep " She pulled up his blanket. We closed the door. Baba never woke up" (173).

Soviets withdraw from Afghanistan.

The Taliban takes control of Kabul, Afghanistan making Afghanistan a dangerous place.

The Taliban massacred the Hazaras in Mazar-i-Sharif, " A few weeks later, the Taliban banned kite fighting. And two years later, in 1998, they massacred the Hazaras in Mazar-i-Sharif" (213). This event not only happened in the book but happened in real life.

Hassan and his wife were killed in the streets after Hassan refused to let the Taliban take Amir and Babas home, " They told Hassan they would be moving in to supposedly keep it safe until I return. Hassan protested again. So they took him to the street--" (219). He and his wife left behind a son Sohrab.

After a long dangerous journey, Amir and Sohrab arrive in America. Amir takes Sohrab to live with him and his wife wanting to adopt him, "I want to adopt him" (325). Although the adoption process is not that easy.

Amir goes to Afghanistan to visit Rahim Khan and to find Hassan's son, " I want you to go to Kabul. I want you to bring Sohrab here" (220). He also learns that he and Hassan were half-brothers.
