  • Amir and Hassan's Friendship

    After the kite flying, Hassan was in danger, but, Amir did not decide to help him. In result of this, the two boys' friendship began to fall apart. The book states "For a week, I barely saw Hassan".(80). This quote demonstrates that loyalty is important within friendships. Being a loyal friend means that you will stand by your friend no matter what, which Amir did not do.Therefore, Amir's lack of loyalty created a feeling of guilt within him.This guilt caused Amir to remain distant from Hassan.
  • Ali and Hassan quit working for Baba

    In 1976, unfortunate events occurred in Afghanistan. Amir explains, "I turned 13 the summer of 1976, the next to last summer of peace and anonymity"(93). During that year, Ali and Hassan quit working for Amir and his father. This was rough for Amir because he and Hassan had a great bond with each other. This event is significant because it shows how Amir truly feels about Hassan.He really does see Hassan as a friend, despite the horrible past event.
  • Soviets and Afghanistan

    Afghanistan changed forever after the Soviet invasion."The soviets invaded Afghanistan. Afghanistan has had little peace since then"(NYT 1). This quote is significant because it shows how this invasion has impacted the whole country for such a long period of time.
  • Escaping from Afghanistan

    In March of 1981, Amir and Baba escape Afghanistan because of the Taliban attacks. Many people crammed into one truck to get away from the terrifying attacks. They end up escaping to Pakistan. One man in the truck nervously says "we are too close to Kabul" (111). This quote is important to the plot of the story because it shows how intense this time was for people in Afghanistan. They were constantly afraid of getting shot.
  • The Move to California

    In 1980, Baba and Amir move to Fremont, California.This gave Amir an opportunity to spend quality time with his father. Amir says " I remember the two of us walking through Lake Elizabeth Park in Fremont ..." (125) Amir reflecting on a memory of his father demonstrates his relationship with his father. Before Amir and Baba moved to California, their father-son relationship was rather complicated. It gradually improved when they moved to California.
  • Driving around with Baba

    Amir's first real connection with his father was when they were driving around together in the new car that Baba got. They were driving to the flee market. Amir explains "On Saturdays, Baba gets me up early and we drive around together and talk" (137). This quote is significant because it shows how the relationship is changing. They never used to have deep conversations before. before this, their relationship was very complex because Baba had trouble connecting with Amir.
  • Amir speaks to Soraya

    Amir has his eye on a girl named Soraya, but it takes a long time for him to finally speak to her. In May of 1985, Amir finally approaches Soraya. He asks her, "Would you like to read one of my stories" (147). This event is important to the plot of the story because it demonstrates how Amir is growing up. After Amir speaks to Soraya, Amir's life changes. He becomes a grown person who is married with a job. Before speaking to Soraya, he was just a guy living off of his father's money and roof.
  • Baba diagnosed with Cancer

    During the Summer of 1985, Baba is diagnosed with cancer and he refuses to do chemotherapy. Amir tells Baba that the chemotherapy would benefit him, however, Baba responds angrily. Baba says "don't you challenge me in public, Amir. Ever. Who do you think you are" (156)? This quote is important because it sets back the progress that Baba and Amir made in their father-son relationship. They were finally getting along, but this outburst really affected their relationship progress.
  • The long invasion (Dec. 27, 1979-1986)

    The soviets invaded Afghanistan in a coup. The invasion lasted more than 9 years. "After 1986, the Soviet Air Force was largely useless by advanced antiaircraft missiles supplied by the US" (NYT 2).
  • Marriage?

    Amir and Soraya's relationship progresses,and Amir decides he wants to marry her. Amir tells Baba "I want you to ask General Taheri if I could have his daughters hand" (161). This quote is significant because it starts a new chapter in Amir's life. it is a turning point for Amir. He has finally found the love of his life.
  • Baba passes away:(

    Baba passes away after Amir's wedding due to his cancer. He died painfully. "Baba's spittle turned bright red and I kneeled beside him and said you'll be all right, I'm here" (158). This quote is important because it resembles how Amir truly loves his father. Despite all the times that Baba got angry at Amir, Amir realizes that he will always need and miss his father.
  • Amir's first book!

    In the summer of 1988, Amir finishes his first book and it gets published. "A man named Martin Greenwalt called from New York and offered to represent me", Amir says in excitement. This quote is significant because it was a very important moment in Amir's life. He had always wanted to get a book of his published, and he finally did.
  • Carrying guilt

    Amir's life was going great, and Amir began to wonder why. He says "there was so much goodness in my life. So much happiness. I wondered whether I deserved it" (183). This quote shows that Amir is carrying the guilt from the past. this guilt is causing Amir to think that nothing remotely great should happen to him. This is important because it is the motivation for why Amir goes back to Afghanistan to fix his guilt from the past.
  • Post war

    The soviets finally left Afghanistan in 1989. "After the war, Afghanistan became devastated by the war and became a beacon to islamic extremist from across the globe"(NYT 2).
  • Amir and Soraya trying to conceive a baby

    Amir and Soraya fail to conceive a baby. Soraya's mother says comfortingly "God knows bachem. Maybe it wasn't meant to be" (191). This quote is relevant because Soraya and Amir wanted a baby more than anything. The fact that they couldn't have one really devistated them. It was a hard time in their life to not be able to have something that they want so much.
  • What went on in Afghanistan after the invasion?

    "In the summer of 1994, power was divided among competing warloads and individual fiefdoms"(NYT 2). This took place after the Soviets left Afghanistan.
  • The Taliban

    The taliban began to grow out. The taliban by the end of 1996 had taken control over Afghanistan. "The taliban imposed strict enforcement of fundamentalist Islamic law"(NYT 3).
  • Rahim Khan

    Amir goes back to Afghanistan to see Rahim Khan. He tells his wife, "I'm going to Afghanistan. Rahim Khan is sick. This event is important because it allows Amir to reflect on the past in Afghanistan. it allows him to atone for his past sins that took place there.
  • the truth about Amir and Hassan's relationship

    Shortly after Amir arrives in Kabul, Amir finds out that Hassan is actually his brother. When he finds this out, he screams "All of you, you bunch of lying goddamn bastards"(222)! This quote is significant because it changes Amir's whole perspective on Hassan. It makes him feel more regretful of the past because he probably would have stopped Hassan from being raped if he knew that Hassan was his brother.
  • Making up for the past

    Hassan dies, which causes Amir to make up for the past and look after Hassan's son. Amir says "I finally found a way to be good again" (192). This quote exemplifies how horrible Amir feels about the way he treated Hassan in the past. to atone for his sins, Amir makes an effort to look after Hassan's son because he knew that Hassan would have appreciated that. in the end, amir ends up raising Hassan's son.
  • 911

    "On September 11 2001, the taliban attract the World Trade Center in New York City" (NYT 3).This was an act of terror that caused many deaths.
  • Karazi

    "In December 2001, Karazi was named chairman of an interim that replaced the defeated Taliban" (NYC 3).
  • Karazi elected president

    "Karazi took office as interim president in June 2002,saying he hoped to secure peace for Afghanistan" (NYT 3).
  • General Patreus

    "General Patraue, the Iraq commander who received much of the credit for the surge there, had taken charge of the US central command in October 2008" (NYT 4). He was responsible for military operations in Iraq.
  • Removal of Gen McChrystal

    "In June 2010, President Obama removed Gen McChrystal after the contemptuous quotes from the general and his staff about senior officials appeared in an article in Rolling stone Magazine" (NYT 4).
