Lincoln runs for the U.S. Senate and has a series of debates against Senator Stephen A. Douglas; Lincoln unfortunately loses but becomes known for his speeches and ideas. video

Lincoln wins the presidency on November 6 against three other candidates. States fear that Lincoln will abolish slavery so they decide to leave the Union; South Carolina is the first to do so on December 20. video

The Civil War takes at least 850,000 lives and although the Union has more people and soldiers, the Confederacy won more battles early in the War. However, the Union wins the war and Lincoln is nicknamed ''The Great Emancipator'' for emancipating the slaves. He wins the presidential election of 1864. video

Lincoln is assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, a slavery advocate, during a visit to the theater. Lincoln dies the next morning. image
