On February 1st, 1850 Lincoln's second son Edward is recorded as dying of teburculosis but t has been suggested that Edward died of medullary thyroid cancer.

On June 16th, 1858 Lincoln gave his "House Divided" speech at what was then the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield. His remarks in Springfield created an image of the danger of slavery-based disunion, and it rallied Republicans across the North. Along with the Gettysburg Address and his second inaugural address, this became one of the best-known speeches of his career.

In 1858 Lincoln ran for senate against Stephen A. Douglas. Although he lost the election, his debates with Douglas showed to the people his stand on slavery.

On November 6, 1860, Lincoln was elected the 16th president of the United States, beating Democrat Stephen A. Douglas, John C. Breckinridge of the Southern Democrats, and John Bell of the new Constitutional Union Party. He was the first president from the Republican Party.

On February 20th, 1862 Abraham Lincolns third son William dies at the age of 12 due to Typhoid. William was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Georgetown.

On January 1st, 1863 Lincoln gave his famous Emancipation Proclamation. It proclaimed the freedom of slaves in the ten states that were still in rebellion. Around 20,000 to 50,000 slaves in regions where rebellion had already been subdued were immediately emancipated. It could not be enforced in areas still under rebellion, but as the Union army took control of Confederate regions, the Proclamation provided the legal framework for freeing more than 3 million slaves in those regions.

On November 19th, 1863 Lincoln gave his most famous speech, The Gettysburg Address. It was given at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, four and a half months after the Union armies defeated those of the Confederacy at the Battle of Gettysburg.

On November 8th, 1864 Abraham Lincoln defeats his former general George McClellan. Even though both of them were very close in the popular vote Lincoln won with a landslide victory of 212 electorial votes as opposed to McClellan's 21.

Abraham Lincoln attended Ford's Theatre with his wife Mary to see the play "Our American Cousin" when he was shot and killed by actor John Wilkes Boothe
