Apr 12, 1861 President Lincoln sent supplies to Fort Sumter. This was a tactic used to make the Confederate Army shoot first to start the Civil War. May 22, 1862 President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves in the Confederate states. This went into effect on January 1st, 1863. Nov 19, 1863 President Lincoln gave the Gettysburgh Address at a cemetary dedication. Jan 1, 1864 President Lincoln was re-elected in 1864. He won easily due to the end of the Civil War. He encouraged the southern states to rejoin the Union. Mar 4, 1865 President Lincoln addressed the need to reconstruct the South and rebuild the Union. Apr 11, 1865 President Lincoln gave a speech on the White House lawn to welcome Southerners back into the Union. Apr 14, 1865 President Lincoln was shot by a southern sympathizer named John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theatre in Washington DC. He died six hours later.
