    On February 12, 1809, Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky to Thomas and Nancy Lincoln. Abraham had a brother, Thomas Lincoln and a sister, Sarah Lincoln. He was born in a log cabin in Kentucky and his mom died from "milk sickness" in 1818 when Abraham was only 9 years old.

    In 1832 Abraham Lincoln volunteered to join the military. He fought against the Indians in the Black Hawk War. His fellow soldiers elected him militia captain.

    On August 3, 1846, Abraham Lincoln was elected a member of the State House of Representatives. When Lincoln got back from the militia he ran for State House of Representatives. He won in 1834, 1836, 1838, and 1840.

    In 1858 Abraham Lincoln had a series of debates with Stephen Douglas during the campaign in Illinois for the U.S. Senate. Lincoln was the Republican candidate and Douglas was the Democratic candidate. Lincoln wanted to contain the slavery to the South while Douglas wanted to expand it to the West.

    On November 16, 1860, Abraham Lincoln won the election of 1860 and became the United States 16th president. He won 55% of popular vote, Abraham was elected right before the bloodiest war in American History, The Civil War.

    The Civil War began on April 12, 1861, when Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard ordered an attack on Fort Sumter. The soldiers in the fort held out the night but gave up the fort on April 13th. Since the Civil War had begun President Lincoln needed a battle plan. He turned to a war hero from the Mexican-American War, Winfield Scott for a plan. Scott suggested a blockade on the South so they couldn't get any resources. This was known as the Anaconda Plan.

    The Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863, by president Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln freed all of the slaves in Confederate states. It also stated the escaped slaves could now fight in the Civil War in segragated regiments. Since the South had seceded from the Union already it did not immediatly free all the slaves. Although it did make the slaves work slower, run away, and start revolts.

    On Novemeber 19, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln gave a speech at Gettysburg. Althought the speech was very short it is known as one of the greatest speeches of all time. It was centered around bringing the Union back together and stated that the thousands of soldiers who had died there had not died in vain. It showed that Lincoln would do anything to bring back and protect the United States of America

    In the election of 1864 President Abraham Lincoln was re-elected, receiving 212 electoral votes compared to George McClellan's 12 votes. During the election the Civil War was still going on and none of the states in the Confederacy participated in the election.

    On April 9, 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox. This marked the end of the blodiest war in U.S. history. Approximately 620,000 soldiers died from battle, accident, starvation, and disease during the war. Only 6 days after the Civil War ended, President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated.

    Abraham Lincoln was assinated
    On April 15, 1865, Abraham Lincoln was shot in the back of the head by John Wilkes Booth in Ford's Theatre. His killer jumped off the balcony and landed on the stage then exited out the back of the theatre. Lincoln was carried to a house across the street from the thetre where he died. John Wilkes Booth was found 12 days later and killed.
