Libncoln joins the Republican Party. The party adopts an antislavery platform, which has become an important issue to Lincoln.

Lincoln is nominated by the Republican Party for President. Lincoln wins the election, defeating three other candidates, Stephen A. Douglas, John C. Breckinridge, and John Bell. Not everyone agreed with Lincoln. On December 20 of the same year, South Carolina secedes from the Union. Its people did not want Lincoln to be President. Ten other states follow.
