Abe Lincoln

  • Born

    Lincoln was born in 1809 in Hodgenville, Kentucky. He was the second son of Thomas and Nancy Lincoln.
  • "A house divided"

    Lincoln gave his "House Divided" speech upon receiving the Illinois Republican Party's nomination for a seat in the Senate in 1858. In the race that followed, Lincoln would go up against Democrat Stephen Douglas in a series of highly covered debates about national issues, the most important being slavery. Lincoln would lose the election to Douglas, but the debates and media coverage of them gave light to what Lincoln was about and eventually led him to winning the presidency of 1960.
  • First Inaugural Address

    Lincoln delivered his first inaugural speech to a nation that was already broken: seven states had already seceded from the Union. His speech was an attempt to persuade them to return.
    When Lincoln, who ran under the Republican party, won the Presidential election the southern states were afraid he was going to try to remove the institution of slavery. Thus, they ultimately succeeded from the Union. This speech was Lincoln's attempt to calm the southern states down.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    The Emancipation Proclamation granted freedom to the slaves located in the Confederate States if they did not return to the Union by January 1, 1863. In addition, under this proclamation, freedom would only come to the slaves if the Union won the war.
  • Gettysburg Address

    Following the Battle of Gettysburg, Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address during the dedication of the cemetery for Union soldiers who fought and died in the battle. In the address Lincoln expressed the great need for Americans to remember the sacrifice made by these soldiers and what they gave the ultimate sacrifice for.
  • Second Inaugural Address

    Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address promised a vast national future only a month before his assassination and the end of the American Civil War. .
  • Assasinated

    Lincoln was assassinated in 1865 whilst watching a play with his wife. His assassian, John Wilkes Booth, fled but was later captured. Lincoln lived for another day before he eventually died, due to the gunshot wound he suffered to the back of his head. Lincoln was 56 years old.
