Why did so many people leave their country and move into to America? They probably did it to escape poverty or from wars. Some people looked for riches or for adventure. -
Mid-1800s
People discovered gold in California and people across the world traveled to North America to become rich. There were many Chinese people that moved to North America to become rich. The Chinese people helped to build the Transcontinental Railroad which opened many new places to have farms. In 1845 to 1848 over one million Irish people moved to North America after their potatocrops failed to grow. Many Americans today celebrate St. Patrick's Day. -
Late 1800s-1920s
Around 40 million people in Eastern and Southern Europe moved to North America. The steamships made the trips go faster and cheaper. People like Italians, Poles, Greeks, Hungarians, Russians and became the workforce for America's growing industries. There were also many Norwegians that traveled to North America in farms like Minnesota and Wisconsin. In 1920s America was a mixed cultured country with over 100 different cultures. 1960s-now
Today there are only immigrants from Asia and spanish speaking countries in Latin America. Today Spanish is the second most speaking language in America. Most of the immigrants come into America illegaly. The Mexican border now have to have a protected fence so no one can sneak into America.
