    A Nation Divided: Events Leading to the Civil War

    This timeline consists of information about the events leading up to the Civil War. Most of these are also why we don't have slavery in our country. These are key moments in our nation's history. Without these we wouldn't be where we are today.
  • The Missouri Compromise

    The Missouri Compromise
    An agreement which declared Missouri a slave state in the Union. It also admitted Maine as a free state. It also declared that the states above an imaginary line had no slavery and the states below it did.This was the just the beginning of a long argument between the north and south, that would eventually lead to the Civil War.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    The agreements made about many new states coming to the union. Such as California being a free state, and allowing New Mexico and Utah territories to decide to allow slavery. Also the compromise outlawed the slave trade in Washington D.C. This was the early in abolishing slavery, but eventually the south would have had enough and split off. The south separating led to the war by the south later fighting for their independence.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska  Act
    This act was written by Stephen A. Douglas in 1854. It was written so Kansas and Nebraska territories could abolish the Missouri compromise by allowing settlers to determine the outcome of slavery. This led to a huge argument between the north and south. Violence also occurred which was eventually seen in the Civil War.
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
    Dred Scott was a Missouri slave who traveled to Wisconsin with his owner. When he came back he went to court to argue that his stay in Wisconsin made him a free man. The Dred Scott decision was made and stated that African Americans could never be citizens of the U.S. and that the Missouri compromise was unconstitutional. This made many more people anti slavery and wanted to end it for good, which was later settled in the war,
  • Election of 1860

    Election of 1860
    In the election of 1860 the Republicans nominated Lincoln but the Democrats were split between the North and South. There were three candidates running against him. Lincoln won easily but with only 40 percent of all votes. All of his votes came from the north and ten southern stares didn't even have Abe on the ballot. Southerners were afraid of slavery ending and this led to the war by them revolting to this.
  • Attack on Fort Sumter

    Attack on Fort Sumter
    Confederate in Charleston, South Carolina, opened fire on a federal fort in Charleston Harbor called Fort Sumter. After 33 hours of attack the defenders of Fort Sumter surrendered. The north knew that this was a huge attack and they were not backing down. This was just the beginning of the Civil War.
