  • The Comprimise of 1820

    The Comprimise of 1820
    The comprimise of 1820 was a bill passed in 1819-1820 that states how slaves would no longer be allowed to be in the Louisiana. However, there was an exception of Missouri. They could have slaves in this state, and that upset the North. The North did not want slavery at all, and expanding definately rubbed them the wrong way.

    This really is what began the whole debate over slavery. It was the first thing that was a big milestone in the road to the civil war. This event was where people started having problems with the southerners expanding slavery into Missouri. This led into the Missouri Comprimise of 1820.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
    America gained land from Mexico, and the North and the South then faced another debtae over whether to expand slavery into this new territory or not.
  • Free Soil Party

    Free Soil Party
    The free soil party is a third party created. It's main purpose was to oppose expanding slavery into the western territories. This made it so that it offset power when it came to election time because now only one party was slavery, and the other two were anti-slavery.
  • Comprimise of 1850

    Comprimise of 1850
    The comprmise of 1850 was series of 5 bills passed in Spetember of 1850. The two large ones were 1) to end slave trade in Washinton D.C., and 2) to make California a state. Making California a state was the big thing because at first the North and South could not agree, then they were going split it in half, making the uper half frree, and the lower half slave. This again would not work, so they had the comprimise of 1850. California then became a free state, making the south extremely upset.

    The fugitive slave act was an act that stated how slave catchers could come to the North and take run away slaves from freedom and back to slavery. What hapened was, the slave catchers would take the slaves that had their papers back into slavery, even if they are free.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    Bleeding Kansas was a time period, 1854- 1861, in wihch both the political debates and just conversations over slavery became very violent. People would harm each other physically after some debates. Also, a man named John Brown and his family broke into huts of pro-slavery men, and killed them, This upset the south very greatly because it was now murder. It also made everybody fear that this might happen to them.
  • The Kansas- Nebraska Act

    The Kansas- Nebraka Act was an act that repealed the Missouri Comprimise of 1820. With just that, the Northerners were very upset because now there would be a chance to make Kansas a slave state. To make things worse, it stated that the people would vote to see if Nebraska and Kansas would be free or slave states. With the numbers already being uneven, the Southerners took action by voting illegally in the vote. This upset the North even more.

    The Dred Scott Case
    The Dred Scott case is about a slave that was owned by a man in Louisiana. When they moved to Illinois, a free state, Scott was unaware that he could petition to be free. When his owner passed away, his widowed wife moved back down to Louisiana where Scott decided to petition for him and his family to be free. He was then denied the right because he was black and the case was ruled that he could not sue the courts due to his skin color.

    Lincoln- Douglas  Debates
    The Lincoln- Douglas Debates were a seriious of debates that took place in Illinois. They were taking place because the North was trying to choose a candidate for the 1860 election. This escaladed the debate because they talked about important issues such as slavery and other very serious controversial issues.
  • John Brown Rebellion

    John Brown Rebellion
    The John Brown rebellion was an event in which John Brown led a raid on Harpers Ferry. It was an attemp to begin a slave rebellion in the south, and since teh south already feared this since the count was two slaves per white in the south, this was something that could happen effectively. The rebeellion attempt failed as John Brown killed 7 people, and was sentenced to be hung. After the hanging, the North celebrated his life and called him a hero, which really pulled the chain of the South.
  • Lincoln Elected President

    Lincoln Elected President
    This was the final straw because he wasn't for expanding slavery, nor against it, and the south didn't want him as the president, and part of the north didn't either. This put the country finally at war a little while after the election. Things had been heating up before, and now they were in flames.
