    Compromise of 1820
    As the south expanded west thet were no longer allowed ito take their slaves with them. The Louisiana Territory now prohibited slavery. This upset the southerners because as they expanded their region, they could not take their slaves with them to where ever they went in that territory. The green represents free states, red represents the slave states.
  • Wilmott Proviso

    Wilmott Proviso
    The United States gained more land from Mexico. Now it was to decide if it was going to be a free territory or a slave territory. A proviso was made to prohibit slavery, in the United States new territory. It helped balance out the country between free and non-free territories. But this had also made the southerners very unhappy, because they want to expand slave territories, this was not helping them.
  • Free Soil Party

    The Wilmot Porviso was strong enough to start a third party. The party was called "The Free Soil Party". The point of the The Soil Party was to prevent the spread of slavery in the Western territories. Representitives of the Free Soil Party stated“…we inscribe on our banner, ‘Free Soil, Free Speech, Free Labor and Free Men,’ and under it we will fight on and fight ever, until a triumphant victory shall reward our exertions.”
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    The Fugitive Slave Act caused many problems, expecially in the North. A slave catcher did not need a arrest warrent or have to hold a trial, if he/she was indeed a rin away slave. It was decided that a Federal Comissioner had to pay five dollars to release a defendent, and ten dollars to turn the defendant over to a slave holder. The northerners were very unhappy about this matter. This abused Northerns athority to take a stand on slavery, and put Northerns in danger.

    It took time to come up with a compromise that truely made all parties some what happy. It took five different laws to come up with the compromise of 1850. Including, California became a free state, Washington D.C. was no longer a trade trading state. The most prominate thing that made up the compromise was the Fugitive Slave Act. The compromise held peace for a short time, however it would not last forever.
  • Kansas- Nebraska Act

    Kansas- Nebraska Act
    The Kansas- Nebraska Act was originally proposed to support the building of the mid-eastern transcontinental Railroad. The Act repeated the Missouri Compromise. A bill signed by Stephen Douglas to let the settlers in Nebraska territory decide. People who were not residents came into Nebraska to vote, 20 out of 600 were residents of Nebraska. John Brown killed 5 pro-slavery men. This was known as "Bleeding Kansas". This event pointed the country even more torwards civil war.
  • Republican Party was made

    The republican party was made because Whig party was split because of the Kansas- Nebraska Act. Republican were mostly in the North and selected John C. Fermont as their presidental canadite in 1856. He out spoken Kansa and Nebraska as free states. The Democratic and Republic party were against eachother. So the North and the South were going against each other. Failing at sticking together upsetting each other over and over again.
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott was a slave and his owner and Dre moved around a lot. Some were free- states, he could have petitioned to be free, but he didn't know. His owner died and he was sent off with his owners widow. He asked for freedom the widow refused. He went to a jury and he did not get freedom because he was not considered a citizen of any of the "free- states* he lived in. The disision became inflammitory when courts said that they could not vote to ban slavery. This sent the counrty on a tailspin.
  • The Lincoln- Douglas Debates

    The Lincoln- Douglas Debates
    Republicans were charging democrats wanting to make slavery legal in all states. Republicans wishing to make the entire country into a group of slave states was the intial debate. Lincolns preposition was not to abolish slavery completly where it was, Just not to spread. Douglas did not like Lincolns decision to leave it up to the Federal Government to decide if slavery was legal or not. He went against the supreme court. 7 debates in all, Douglas won most, Strengthened the republican party.

    By the time 1860 came around it was time to elect a president. Since the parties were divided four canadates were choosen. Lincoln was nominated for the North and Brenkinridge was choosen for the south. Lincoln won the election and left the Southerners very unhappy.

    The south said they were going to leave the union if Lincoln had won the election. And that is exactly what they did. The union broke apart. Then the south elcted their own president Jefferson Davis. The south named them selves "The Confederate States of America". This majorly marked the beginning of war. "Pre-war".
  • John Brown Movement

    John Brown Movement
    John Brown attempted to start a liberation movement among slaves in Harpors Ferry, in Virginia 1859. Lincoln called Brown a misguided Fanatic. Brown killed 7 people and injured 10 others on Harpers Ferry. Brown intended to arm slaves with weapons, but the attack failed. Brown was hung in 1859 for the slave rebellation. Northerners celebrated because Brown took a stand. Not because he was hung.
