Governor Farbus of Arkansas brings in National Guard to prevent black students from going into a white school. Nine black teenagers were removed for their own safety after a mob formed, they were later allowed to attend school but the following august Farbus shut down all local high schools to prevent segregation, it took a year for them to be opened again.

Four college student's were refused service at a lunch counter because of the color of thier skin so they staged a sit in. It lasted a week and by the end nearly 1,000 students were taking part in the protest.

The freedom riders were a group of black civil rights activists traveling the country staging protests. On May 14th, 1961they returned to find their bus burned.
