  • Abolition and "Uncle Tom's Cabin"

    Abolition and "Uncle Tom's Cabin"
    -Written by William G. Allen
    -In 1852-53
    -The letter praises the abolitionist novel and points out how the novel led him to say that slavery is a national sin, the illustration shows the cruelty of slavery (as seen by northern abolitionists).
    -The document seems to be moving towards conflict, but still shows compromise. The man tells how the novel showed the evils of slavery, which the north saw and the south did not.
    -Cause: The wild popularity of the novel brought upon new thougts on slavery.
  • Nebraska Act

    Nebraska Act
    -Written by a Detroit journalist
    -in 1854
    -This article was written to show that the north proposed the compromise was something that worked for everyone and could be fully agreed upon.
    -It shows a spirit of compromise, as the entire article speaks of how all section scan agree to new states declaring their own laws.
    -Cause: Debates over the states ability to become free or slave and if they could decide that.
    -Effect: Elections became rigged and weighted, many fights ensued, entered as free.
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
    -Written by Roger Taney
    -In 1857
    -The document was said by Judge Taney, during a case in which a slave wished to keep his freedom, but Taney ultimately ruled against him, showing much racism towards blacks.
    -The document shows conflict between the white population and the slave and free blacks, as Taney ruled the case based almost entirely on race and bias towards the north.
    -Cause: Racsim, Black Codes, corrupt government.
    -Effect: Deeper North-South divide, key issue on the Republican platform
  • Election of Lincoln

    -Written by Northern journalists for the New York Times
    -In 1860
    -The document shows the overwhelming popularity of Lincoln and the Republicans in the North, with all headlines saying something about majority votes, etc.
    -It shows compromise within the north, but shows conflict between the two sides of the nation, as the south had virtually no support for Lincoln, it was all concentrated in the north.
    -Effect: Republican popularity, the Civil War?, Emancipation Proclamation.
  • Dissolution of the Union

    Dissolution of the Union
    -Written by a Charleston journalist
    -In 1860
    -The document was created to announce the south’s declaration of secession and the breaking of the Union, started by South Carolina.
    -It shows the height of tensions between the north and south leading up to the Civil War, as the south claims that it has completely broken from the Union, an obvious conflict
    -Cause: Rebellion and upset in the South.
    -Effect: The Civil War.
