Civil War : Causes and Events

  • 3/5 Compromise

    3/5 Compromise
This compromise was the one that gave the south a lot more voting privlegdes. It meant that when you have to vote for every 5 slaves they counted as 3 people. This meant that because of all of the slaves that were in the US at the time there would be a lot more votes and that the people who owned a lot of slaves could help push the vote little by little more into there favor. This was a little unfair to the people who didn't own slaves.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    Louisiana Purchase
The louisiana purchase started the big push for westward expansion. Also without it we wouldn't have the land that the civil war was fought on. We wouldn't have about half of this country. Slavery in the Us during the time near the civil war was all throughout the south, and a lot of that land came from the Louisiana Purchase. This Purchase may have started a chain reactioin in the country.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise was when Missouri entered the country as a slave state. To balance out the ratio of free to slave states Maine was admitted as a free state. Also the 36'30" line was created. The line meant that anywhere north of the line (accept missouri who was above the line) slaveryu was outlawed and anywhere south of the line slavery was permitted. Also the louisiana territory was a non-slavery area as well. This is what started the divide between North and South:Free or Slave.
  • Fugitiove Slave Act

    Fugitiove Slave Act
This act was passed so that slaves that ran away to try and become free not only couldn't become free, but they could be hunted down and brought back as well. This sort of thing was blown out of proportion considering people that caute the slaves could lie and say the they caute the person the owner was looking for and bring a free slave into slavery. The North didn't like this and neither did the free slaves that were getting stuck in the mess. This caused some tension to build between the N&S.
  • Dred Scott vs. Sandford

    Dred Scott vs. Sandford
This case was when dred scott was suing sandford for his freedom. Scott was in a free state where slavery was outlawed but he was brought here as a slave so the question was "Is he free or not?" This question was brought all the way to the supreme court and it ruled that slaves aren't citizens so slaves dont have citizens rights and therefore couldn't sue or be free. This showed how slavery affected people and how it was unfair/unconstitutional, in my eyes anyway. This soon led to the civil war.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debates

    Lincoln Douglas Debates
These were a series of 7 debates where they discussed how to solve different issues, the main being slavery. The debates were between Abe Lincoln and Stephen Douglas and they were both fighting for the control of the Illinois state legislature. The debates were very popular and people came from all over to listen. Lincoln lost in the long run, but he didn't stop there. Slvery was an important issue and some popel didn't like the thought of what he wanted to do (stop it).
  • Election of Lincoln

    Election of Lincoln
This was when Abe Lincoln was elected as our 16th president. The south however hated him. The momented he was elcted 2 states in the south secceeded from the US and later 11 more did. This was the final thing that started the civil war. It goes without saying that the south didn't like the idea of lincoln as a president because he was against slavery and wanted to get rid of it for good. Which is how the war started.
